Gigabyte r7 260x overclock

mbox

Hi, i own a gigabyte r7 260x(windforce 2x edition) rev.2 and i would like to oc it a little.

This edition of the card has a base clock of 1180, i think. Can you suggest me the best way to overclock it and how much do you think is safe for the durability of the card?

I'm sorry if i post it in the wrong place and for my bad english.

Get MSI Afterburner.

Get Unigine Heaven or Unigine Valley for quick stability testing.

In MSI Afterburner increase Core Clock by around 20MHz and then run the Unigine benchmark. If you get black screen or artifacts or FPS drops or freezes then your OC is not stable and you have to take few MHz back from the core. If it looks stable then increase by another 20MHz (it doesent have to be 20MHz increments but I would say that increase of maximum 20MHz at the time).

Once you reach your maximum stable Core clock then start doing the same thing with Memory clock except there you can go 50MHz at the time.

Dont do both at the same time! First core then memory.

As long as you dont touch voltage you cant hurt your card. If you however want higher OC then you will have to increase voltage a bit (by 0.05V - 0.1V) if you want to be really safe. Note that increasing voltages may not always help to get higher OC and it all comes down to your luck in silicon lotery -> how good your chip is. Also increasing voltage will raise your GPU temperatures.

Since you have Gigabyte GPU the chance is that your card is voltage locked which means you cant adjust voltage so there is no danger of overclocking (as long as you are overclocking within reason, dont throw +1000MHz at the core).

EDIT:

Also if your OC is stable in Unigine benchmarks that doesent automaticaly means it will be stable in all games. Usualy some games may put your OC to the knees and you will have to take few MHz back from your card. But it is good to do quick dirty OC to see how high you can get your card. Only by playing games you will find out if your OC is really stable. It may take few days of gaming. You may experience some crashes if the OC is unstable.

If you want to avoid these problems find your maximum stable OC by testing card in Unigine benchmark and then take few MHz back from it even if it was stable on higher OC. That will help your card become more stable. It is your choice.

This video should help you get a decent understanding of how to overclock your card.

One last thing...can i do a similar oc for the cpu,by rising only clock and leaving the stock voltage? (I have a fx6300@3.5, i would like to take it to 3.7/3.8) how can i test cpu stability?

I think CPU stress test would be prime95, but I am not really familar with CPU stress testing..
