pretty simple, convert into KG when doing maths, then convert back pounds

Not sure about the whole story, but kilogram works better with all other units, more specifically the joule

20.18 cubic feet is the first part

 

fir       = 28 x 20.18 = 565 lb

maple = 22 x 20.18 = 444 lb

Little story :

 

The mass has a strange unit, because in the unit is a prefix. This is due to the history of the SI. The unit supposed to be equal to one liter of water. This would be called a grave. The volume unit liter is derived from the unit of length. The French thought that the unit was too big and thought that it could give problems with trading and daily use. That is why they have rejected the grave and introduced a new unit. This unit is equal to one milliliter of water. That is 1/1000 of the liter. This new unit got the name gram. This did not seem to be so practical at all and that is why they wanted go back to the grave, but with a new name. The gram was exactly one thousandth of a grave, so the new unit was kilogram, in other words: 1000 gram. That is why there is a prefix in the SI. Later the definition was rejected, because is was not so exact.

metric is much easier to work with, then just convert it to imperial/metric depending  on what they want

@OP serious answer is it really doesn't matter how you deal with this problem...but you need to convert all of the units to the same system...either metric or imperial.  Then make sure you're not using kilograms when your price is $/gram (or similar).  Make sure you use enough decimal places when you convert units (lets say 4 decimal places) so you don't get fucked over on rounding off on your intermediate steps causing a bigger and bigger error as you get towards the final answer.

I'm Canadian and we use metric as well, doesn't change the fact that its bad advice.

So glad NZ only has to deal with metric. The biggest conversion issue is in chemistry using grams (mol g^-1 for exapmle) and physics using Kg. And that's just multiply by 1000. Everything else is just 10 cm? Ok I plug 0.1m in to my equations. So simple
