I recently went to Sim lim square (Building dedicated to selling electronics there) to pick out parts for my very first computer build. I went to one of the shops that provides DIY part picking but they'll do the installation. I asked him if he has stock for the i7-6700k as i wanted to get the z170 series motherboard and he told me that he has receive a lot of problems from his customers that had the i7-6700k and suggested to me to get the i7-4790 instead and said that OC will damage the CPU. I do find him very untrustworthy though as i have never heard of problems with the i7-6700k. So is there really a problem with the i7-6700k ? or is he just trying to get me to clear his i7-4790 stock ... and will OC damage the CPU even if it does not reach extreme temperature?

No overclocking will not damage CPU if you do it right.

Probabaly is trying to get you to clear his stock on older CPUs

Currently i cannot even boot on my 6700k not sure if my oc killed it. because my water cooler pump was not working and i was running at 100 degrees. i offed it and changed to stock cooler and it stopped working. Hopefully tmr i can find out if my motherboard is dead or my cpu is dead. May i know which shop u go to?

100 Degrees C lol?

You probably killed. What are your other parts? Might of been a bad PSU also.

I have a New Corsair RM 650 for this rig.

Thats not a half bad PSU. Medium Tier. Possibility but small. You could of possibly killed it. What were the overclock settings?

The guy that told me 6700k has problems is the Scorpiaproshop #06-62, im thinking of getting the 6700k but now im quite doubtful

Go for it. Not a lot of people, have had problems. Just use the compatble boards like H170, Z170, a decent air cooler like the BeQuiet! Pure Rock ect.

Probability a good idea to make sure your cooling is working before you OC?

Go to Fuwell  #04-02 the guys there are nicer and cheaper. They usually can give discounts upon request. And also the 6700k was out of stock in Singapore for 3 months and i just got mine this month. The 6700k price also increased significantly. You should really thank that guy who recommended u the 4790.

There is nothing wrong with the 6700k. There are a couple of reasons as to why he wants you to use a 4790k.

Like someone else said, he probably wants to clear his stock. Or, the more likely reason, he has no idea how overclocking Z170 works. Remember, FIVR was removed off the chip and on to the board. This means board quality is more important. Voltage limitations have also changed, as Skylake is reported to be able to handle up to 1.4V on the core safely. DDR4 has far more timings than DDR3 (at least, in my personal experience at the moment of overclocking DDR4 for the past 3 days) and Skylake chips don't vary that much like the Haswell chips. Haswell chips had a large variance in OC levels, with some being able to hit 5.0, and others not passing 4.6ghz on the 4790k. Skylake's range is much smaller, with almost everyone hitting 4.5ghz with ease, with the highest being 4.8/4.9 (very rare for 4.9 from what i've seen) on safe 1.4 and under voltages.

If the CPU was bad, it wouldn't be selling like hotcakes right now, and there would be news all over the place if it had a fault of its own. Do not blame bad overclockers for a CPU being bad. The same people probably say Prime95 is dangerous too, when they are the ones running absurd overclocks on adaptive voltage and using lackluster cooling solutions. "It's 1 hour cenibench stable!" might as well stress test on minesweeper.

TL:DR? The 6700k works fine. Some of the users however, are defective.

thx man appreciate it, have a like.

Also "apparently" up to 1.45v on good cooling is OK with Skylake, I talked to a few guys that got review samples from intel and intel told em 1.45v and under is fine.  (This is probably why loads of people binning 6700k are finding max freq @ 1.45v)

True i cannot deny. The price of 6700k are also very high currently and stocks are very low. Depends on your budget.

This is my experience. I really like skylake but it because of my damaged mobo/cpu i couldnt do shit. It all started with my stupid watercooler pump that didnt work. I was really hyped to overclock this cpu though. Hope i can get my comp fixed asap to get it back working.
