So I found this processor on the pass mark website listed as their best price to power CPU:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117517&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction-CS&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-CS-_-Processors%20-%20Server-_-Intel-_-19117517&cm_sp=&AID=11886886&PID=3962334&SID=

It is a Xeon and I am very confused about it. Why is it only 8 bucks?

Is it a viable option for a budget rig ($500 range)?

What motherboard does it fit? (server?) I had trouble finding one with the socket.

I'm trying to build my friend the cheapest rig possible (he only wants to play Dota 2 on high settings) and I just don't want to screw him over with this.

its VERY old

you should be fine with a pentium or i3

you can even fit a used i5 in that $500 budget

that will perform far better than a 10 year old xeon

yes

Gaming is priority?

EDIT: Here is a quiet and capable tower that is capable of smashing games like CS:GO, LoL, Dota 2, and SMITE at 1080p. This PC is even capable of things like GTA 5 and Fallout 4.

You don't need an aftermarket cooler for that and the GPU could be upgraded, give me a moment

1) Don't use passmark, it is a terrible benchmark when comparing processors for gaming.

2) It's $8 because it is a really old processor by today's standards. Performance is far behind what we can achieve today.

3) No.

4) Nothing new as far as I'm aware, it's 771? It's an old processor so the chances of finding a new motherboard is slim.

5) Then don't. You're either better off going with an i3-4170 or i5-4460 and a used GPU.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

In a 500$ going with a better GPU is pretty difficult you might be able to squeze in an R9 380 but it'll be difficult and I've already cut some corners on the rest of the build. The games his friend is going to be playing aren't intense at all and he could probably benefit from the lack of noise, and heat being put out by more powerful hardware.

Why is passmark bad for cpu tests?

Not really hard at all, I just made a parts list without sacrificing anything except dual channel RAM for $486~

Why is passmark bad for cpu tests?

Because it tests unrealistic loads and circumstances that a video gamer would never come across, all of the information on it is basically irrelevant for what you're looking for.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.
