Hey guys,

Now that I have my desktop in my dorm, the laptop is used out and about where I'm not that close to a wall outlet, and because of that I need to change the way I use it to preserve battery life.

One of those things is not using chrome, because it uses more of the cpu can some of the games I play... (and still manages to be laggy as shit) same story with firefox, but to a lesser extent. Opera is just based of chrome, so there isnt much luck there.

I have resorted to MS Edge up till now, but its just an awful browser to use... I'm having more trouble now than ever before, and it seems to be getting worse. Microsoft tries to shove it down our throats but refuses to make it a viable alternative to the aforementioned browsers. Guess its the trouble of using a laptop running the mess of an ecosystem that is windows...

With that rant out of the way, is there any other browser that won't kill the battery life?

Internet Explorer 11.

Yes, I'm serious.

IE11 is pretty lightweight, but I'm actually not sure about battery life. My laptop runs idles for about 10 minutes on battery before shutting down off.

what's edge giving you trouble with?

The sole reason I went back to mozilla was because I needed my adblocker :P

Every other time I exit a fullscreen video on youtube it will just force close, and since I use the laptop for a lot of youtube, it becomes an issue quick.

Also the bookmark system is just inefficient, and imports the bookmarks from chrome backwards which is annoying as hell...

No - there aren't any more viable options available. It's important to keep in mind that MS Edge is still new; There's a developers preview build in the works that is loaded with new features for Windows 10. This update will bring (or rather should) browser extensions. Although I've heard that the browser extensions will be out next year, maybe with the build.

I also reverted back to Chrome just because I needed AdBlocker

Yeah, I followed a guide to do some weird registry hacks to get windows's secure content system to block ads system wide. only side effect is that a popup saying "only secure content is shown" comes up every time an ad is blocked on Edge.

Nothing lighter than Dillo unless you want to go text based, but it looks straight out the mid 90s.

It seemed pretty light on the cpu when watching 1080p60 content on youtube (chrome goes crazy with 50%+ cpu usage in that scenario), but I couldn't find anywhere to import bookmarks, and I use the bookmarks on chrome often...

Sort of another reason why I keep coming back to chrome, because when I add bookmarks on my desktop, its really handy to have them sync over the the laptop.

I suggest reevaluating Edge after the Threshold 2 update which is released around the 10th. It fixes a lot of bugs and is much faster (still no extentions :( ). I'm actually using it as my main browser which sounds strange but I like it.

Will do. I really want to like edge, as it gets a lot of things right, but I just need it to be more stable and implement bookmarks better before I fully use it.

Stuff like when a folder within a folder in the bookmark bar, opens in a new panel off to the right rather than just being a dropdown like chrome. Maybe I'm just being too hard on it, but the announcement that extension support wont be coming till next year left a very sour taste in my mouth...

Like this?   saOKMJG.png

I don't normally use the Bookmark bars as I don't like things taking up screen space but I tested it for you.

Whoops NM it still does it. I counted the favorites folder as a folder within a folder but if I add another it brings it up on the side

To block ads on IE, you can use Protection Lists.

Click the gear icon -> Manage Add Ons -> Tracking Protection -> Get Tracking Protection List online

It opens up a new window (Yes, you will need to set IE as the default just to set the tracking lists). In the new window, the two lists I use are Easy Privacy and EasyList Standard.

However, it can overblock stuff at times (It sometimes will block some pictures by random). You also can't really edit the list, but it is a decent way of blocking ads on IE though.

You might have to turn on the protection lists by clicking the gear icon-> Safety ->Turn on tracking protection. When it works, you'll see a blue circle with a cross through it next to the refresh icon. If you click the icon, you can turn tracking protection off if you want to see ads again or if the protection list blocks too much.

I use IE and Chrome as my main browsers. Firefox's inability to get along with flash would result in it crashing all of the time as I streamed anime with it.

Edge doesn't support tracking protection lists nor add ons at all so it was a deal breaker for me. The lack of options makes it hard to use as well. I really need my password manager extension to make Edge viable for me.

IE11 is indeed the lightest web browser. It has been shown to give substantial more hours of battery life over Chrome.

Firefox, would take second place, despite slower startup time.

Edge is really not finished. It was rushed out for make the Win10 release.

While Edge has improved overtime via updates, Windows 10 coming up big update will improve it more, still no extension, that got delayed once again until next year.

I am trying Vivaldi, and it is really cool.

Yeah I checked it out, but its about as bad as chrome in regards to cpu usage for me.

I use 1080p60 videos on youtube to test, as chrome handles that with the grace of an ice skating elephant, while edge and IE have no issues...

Part of that is probably because it is based off of Chromium

That's the problem with having issues with the most used web browser, because many alternatives are just based of it, like opera and vivaldi.
