Actually 1080p is FullHD, 720p is HD and 2160p is 4K.

Why everyone calls it 4K? Because 4K is two symbols.

Marketing pretty much. Catchier and easier to remember and give your best buy sales pitch to gullible customers that don't know any better about your tv's.

1440p is technically known as 2k, but that's confusing as fuck as it isn't 2000 or anything related to it. Just 2x 720p on a side.

4k is actually totally ok with me seeing as it's basically 4000 and its 2x2x 1080p.

Also gaming/monitor 4k doesn't always equal TV/cinema 4k... Really confusing. (the other is 4096x2160)

no, "4k" means native resolution, which is different from UHD

do you get all you facts based on ambiguous information from wikipedia?

try goolging "4k vs uhd" and learn the difference

UHD is not 4k

or listen to linus' videos for a change, maybe you'll learn something other than "wikipedia says so, must be right"

http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/174221-no-tv-makers-4k-and-uhd-are-not-the-same-thing

The simplest way of defining the difference between 4K and UHD is this: 4K is a professional production and cinema standard, while UHD is a consumer display and broadcast standard. To discover how they became so confused, let’s look at the history of the two terms.

from YOUR wikipedia page that YOU linked:

DCI 4K should not be confused with ultra-high-definition television (UHDTV) AKA "UHD-1", which has a resolution of 3840 x 2160 (16:9, or approximately a 1.78:1 aspect ratio). Many manufacturers may advertise their products as UHD 4K, or simply 4K, when the term 4K is traditionally reserved for the cinematic, DCI resolution.[3][4] This often causes great confusion among consumers.[5]

Congratulations, you have qualified as a "confused consumer"!

UHD is not 4k

4k means a resolution with approximately 4000 horizontal pixels. Period. It's not an ambiguous definition, it's clear as day. Anything that has within 250 pixels of 4000 pixels horizontally can be considered 4k. As much as I adore Linus he can't change facts by saying so - I understand why he's mistaken, and you in the same way, but that doesn't make you right. Wikipedia has a very in depth page about it, that is very coherent with itself and understands that substandards can exist within the same nomenclature of 4k. If you want anohter source, pc magazine also defines it as

Approximately 4,000 (4K) pixels of horizontal resolution in several digital formats

and it only makes sense since the term "4k" is just shorthand for 4000.

UHD fits the definition and adds a specific number, which is 3840x2160. DCI 4k actually includes a framerate too - it is not merely a resolution. It still fits the definition though. If you want to make a distinction, you should say UHD or DCI, or whatever the standard you're referring to is.
