I would beg to differ with both of you...

What about safe from the law? :P if you need Tor, you're more than likely doing something dodgy, and is the browser really all that safe?

Just because a person wishes to protect their privacy doesn't mean they've commited a crime. :)

 

That said I wouldn't trust TOR personally. Free and open network... for security and anonymity. Hmm.

Tor provides you an anonymous id, what is safer than that? It is really difficult (have not tried, but I can imagine) to track back those anonymous IPs and associate them with someone specific... I use them to watch British online tv in Spain xd (have to reset connections about 6 times before getting an English host). On top of that you need to personally install every plugin you need to use (java, shockwave, flash). The point of you not having that by default is just to provide safety online... So, is it the safes browser, probably. Is it the quickest, most efficient, most supported? Definitely not.

Edit: I can see government hosting tor waypoints lolz

I might actually use IE if I could get the stupid bookmarks to import. When I select Chrome (only choice even tho I have Firefox too) to import from exactly nothing happens. Perhaps it's because I have my user folders on the D: drive rather than C:?

Chrome is high up there though. That said, I'm fairly positive Google would give out anyone's search history if some gov. asked for it... That doesn't make me stop using it, it's the best one I've used so far, and Firefox is my 2nd favorite!

A trustworthy VPN which doesn't record IP addresses or at least refuses anyone access to their records.

Impossible. Government still can,

 

Also Tor prevents any information linking things like Flash or any extension or plugin

I'm certain there are VPNs which operate out of countries which uphold the value of privacy and where the US has no power. It's certainly not impossible. Improbable perhaps.

I would still feel more comfortable relying on a closed network or server rather than an open one. :P

there was news that Tor is monitored by the FBI.

U can say that, but then again, if ur using Tor as a safe browser, u arent an exit node. Unless u are an exit node, yea good luck with that. (all traffic is routed to the exit nodes)
