The Practicality of Setups

So recently, I have started watching Tech Source's series called Setup wars on YT.

And I am noticing one thing. The practicality of these setups are getting pretty low. I say this because people are trying to make their builds "too perfect" in my mind. Most of the setups you see now will just have the monitor, speakers, mouse pad and mouse on them, nothing else like a pencil cup, pencil sharpener or even any evidence that any work is actually done on the desks. Take this one for example at 2:14 in this video:

I am starting to see that people are stripping their desks of everything useful except for a pc. Is this really the right way to go though? Share your thoughts in the comments below, thank you.

I don't have a single one of those things on my desk. Everything I need is digital.

I wouldn't want to actually do busy work on a desk with a PC in front of me because I would get distracted waaay too easily, though that's just me.

why do you need a pencil if you do your work on a PC...

the point of a minimalist setup like that is to make stuff look clean

if you only use a pencil a few times a month theres no point in leaving it on your desk taking up space and making a mess

Well, that one is just for show, they should tidy it up. In practicality, I have similar setup. I do however keep pens in my desktop table drawers and a couple post-its.

I probably should've phrased what I said better, what I meant was if someone was also going to be doing physical work, which as a student I do, as well as work on a computer.

I doubt any of them are students. From what I can tell, they appear to be video and music producers.

Point taken, I probably should've considered that when posting this, but still, even as a video and music producer I think you'd be doing some physical work, unless of course you keep that in a drawer.

well yeah...

you dont leave all your stuff all over your desk when youre not working do you??

there are a lot of people who prefer to have a clean looking place than having everything they need cluttering their desk

or like me, I have two desks, one for computer and one for eating/work

both fo them are pretty much empty because I keep all my tools such as pencils and paper on a separate shelf so I dont have to see it

That's a good idea, I really should organize my desk a little more though with papers and everything, but must of what I have on it is fine.

Heh, I'm "working" right now. Working on a LEGO roller for my phone. :P

But people like me get distracted easy and I try to keep a clean setup. Hell, if a wire behind my desk is out of place, I will pull shit out and redo everything. EVERYTHING.
