Painting a Motherboard?

Hi LTT Community!

 

I'm rebuilding my PC currently and wanted to know if there was a SAFE way to paint the ram slots and the PCI-E slots as well without damaging them? Thanks in advance!

Hello.

 

Answer: Not the best idea, you need to have something covering every contact in the RAM slots and PCIe slots and such to make sure to not get any paint in them and you need to mask off all the areas you don't want to paint.

Only recommend painting if the board has a removable thermal armor like the Sabertooth Mark S and you just paint the thermal armor

Hi there :)

I wouldn't suggest it, you risk getting paint in the contacts for the board which would damage it, possibly beyond repair. However, it can be done, Linus made this video on it.

it's a bit hard to do without damaging th MOBO. but if you're mobo have a removal parts like metal armor or something you can do it. Linus used to paint his mobo armor and the rams either

Far too risky to paint a motherboard. Even though Linus did it, I will not do it myself. Chances are excellent that you can brick it during the process if any paint gets into the slots.

I just did this to my Rampage V Extreme.  Various techniques I've seen include masking all the slots and spraying with plasti-dip, but I actually wanted only the (red) slots and ports painted, not the PCB.  What I decided to do was mask the parts of the board around the slots and use a small brush with acrylic paint.  For the SATA ports, I dabbed the outside with a cottonball.  I'll post a video with the process here and on my buildlog (http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/461552-nostromo-x99-rve-5960x-980ti-3-way-sli-caselabs-sth10-petg-aquacomputer/) and video log on youtube.  Here are the results:
