support? It's a freaking NIC. The TCP/IP protocol hasn't changed in years. Neither has UDP.

The first generation of USB-C products seem to be focusing on splitting in addition to networking. It should be much cheaper than this when a 10Gb dongle without this splitting comes along.

its a workstation, can USB nic do teaming? can they do link aggregation? if not then they should be on a workstation board. their are a lot of features nic can provide. most of the time you need a good intel nic.

It does. The first link is a 3.1 with 3.0 superspeed splits and 1Gb. The second is 10Gb standalone but an Apple product. I used both to say prices will be lower when competitors like Starch start making them.

 

If they can't, it's simple to write the software interface to handle it.

I wouldn't bet on that adapter on DealExtreme actually being able to handle 10Gbit like it claims. Anyway even if it does, why would you want to use a bunch of adapters? It's like a 99.9% chance that someone will plug in Ethernet into this board so why not have a native port?

 

It will probably be fairly simple to get things like link aggregation to work on it once the OS is up and running, but it might involve several extra steps that it's not necessary when you don't use adapters. There is also the possibility that it doesn't work as it should before the OS boots up. For example if you have to rely on some program to make it work like a normal NIC then those things might not work in BIOS.

What you are suggesting just adds complexity and possibility for errors, while not really having any benefit. Asus don't need more room for ports on the back because they haven't even filled the space they already got. They could easily have fit a third network port on the back if they wanted, or more USB ports.

I'm pretty sure it's only the transmission rate of the connector and it can't actually do 10Gb for $18,

I'd be one of the outliers since my house has no ethernet wired in.

 

What I'm saying is ASUS could forego having more ports and save expenses on their side which they may or may not pass on to consumers. 1 Thunderbolt port with a 4-way 10Gb ethernet switch dongle attached and 2 USB 3.1 ports that a consumer can run splitters off of is all they really need (detach one splitter when doing a BIOS update via USB flash). It may make the board look more premium to have all that space used in some meaningful way, but there's beauty in minimalism that some people just can't seem to wrap their heads around. And honestly it's better for me to externalize the cost to get dongles since a board failing doesn't force me to eat the cost of buying as many ports. I'm also given greater freedom with other motherboard configurations.

 

Assuming 2 4-way splitters, that's 8 USB connections: mouse, keyboard, backup drive or bay, USB wireless antenna if you so choose, phone charger, racing wheel, H.O.T.A.S., battery bank charger, and that still leaves 1 left. I just don't see the benefit of forcing all that cost on the consumer for each motherboard, but what do I know?

Why even bother with NICs anymore? Just hook up a 10Gb ethernet dongle to a USB 3.1 port. You could get more room on the back I/O by changing everything to 3.1 ports except the audio.

the USB is 10 Gb but no way is hell that the Ethernet is not 1Gb. the Ethernet speed is not in the second one.

The 6-pin is PCIe power. Two 2 8s are for the CPU and all the fan and USB headers.

Yeah.  It's the same IO for the most part, but this is what the Pro would've been.  Still a gorgeous IO arrangement and just the Workstation, Deluxe, and Pro boards are gorgeous these last two gens.  The WS in general is just perfect.  Wish they had PS/2, though.  Still wish they had a Pro.

I remember JJ saying they cancelled the Pro, or maybe that was outside select countries / zones.  Really hope they bring back PS/2 in their signature boards outside the lowest end.  A Deluxe with PS/2 is still the dream.

Keyboard.  Believe it or not I do notice the difference when I am typing around 180+ words-per-minute.  PS/2 feels far smoother than USB at that speed at-least input wise.  I can live without it, but it still is preferred greatly.  And as per your earlier comments - I am hoping Z180 or X190 will come with XPoint.  The dream of having system ram and storage in a dimm slot is enticing and exciting.

3DXPoint won't be deployed until 2020. You're waiting until the successor of Icelake at a bare minimum.

Unfortunate, but at the least Skylake will probably hold me over until Cannonlake-E.  Rather crazy how much performance it has in comparison to some old six-core Sandy-chips in multi-threaded workloads.
