Google Chromecast (2015) Review: No 4K Support

4960X

Chromecast 2015's main competetors are the Amazon Fire TV Stick and Roku Streaming Stick. It costs about $10 less and it easily outperforms both competetors thanks to the 802.11ac Wi-Fi. You also need to have an Amazon Prime subsbriction to take full advatange of Amazon Fire TV Stick and Roku Streaming Stick which will end up costing more in the long term.

the new chromecast is using Marvell Armada 1500 Mini Plus 88DE3006 which runs at 1.3ghz. I have the original chromecast and I'm definitly upgrading. Anybody here happy with their chromecast?

i really enjoy it, i bought it for 107$ in the us when i went to NYC, so it only cost me 85 euros (it cost 109 euros at the time in the netherlands) (this was b4 the euro went to poo) and yes it was worth it, for watching movies, streaming your macbook and iphone to it and watching youtube vids :D

They're actually pretty good, but I'd rather just build a streaming PC for more options.

Intel Core i7-6700K | Corsair H105 | Asus Z170I PRO GAMING | G.Skill TridentZ Series 16GB | 950 PRO 512GB M.2

That would be way more expensive and you would need to maintain it.

The review doesn't mention if it supports VP9 or HEVC. That's the only thing I am interested in.

Might be good if you want to add a bit of "SmartTV" functionality to your regular TV, but as a HTPC it's not good since there is no support for HEVC, VP9 or 10bit H.264 which will seriously limit the amount of files it will play.

Not sure what apps are compatible with the Shield TV (whatever that Nvidia TV box is called) but so far it seems like it is the best bet as an inexpensive HTPC.

But I could do so much more with it.

I have a Roku 3 in my bedroom and a chromecast in my living room. I use the Roku 3 so much more than the chromecast. I like it a lot better.

I wonder if this will be more reliable than Chromecast 1. The number of times that the apps running on the chromecast crashes is absurd. It also requires a reboot everytime you use it to get a somewhat reliable experience.

omg this.  My chromecast 1 crashes every time I try to watch something. I'm going to give this new one a try.

Yet practically everyone and their mother recommends the chromecast on this forum, despite on many situations where they aren't the ideal device.

In most cases, I'd recommend a Roku 3 over a chromecast, unless the screen sharing feature is something you specifically need - which is not, for most people.

I have had a Roku 2 xD for many years now. It's great. The apps I use have the best navigation on Roku. No clutter, always on, and I get very good speed from it

I like the chromecast, but a "full size" (yeah I know) streaming device suits my needs better. I will probably pick up another Roku in the future when my needs grow.

I use the screen sharing feature a lot. I would get the roku 3 if it wasn't for the screen sharing feature.

Awesome, that makes the chromecast quite useful for you.

Most people don't use the screen sharing though. Or they use it for something that a Roku or other TV box can do natively without having to screen cast another device.

I would be inclined to agree with this, probably the best off the shelf option for a media centre ever, and has some nice gaming features too
