HTC NO to monthly security updates

 HTC Americas president Jason Mackenzie sent out a tweet yesterday that called such updates "unrealistic." The monthly updates were a response to the Stagefright vulnerability, which first started getting noticed in July.

 

This is an extremly bad thing.. The only companies that promise monthly security update is Nexus devices, LG and Samsung.. Other manufactures like HTC, Sony, etc are all not releasing security updates.. This is the situation of android ecosystem..even if they provide update, will they provide it to all phones they ever made.. the answer is no..It has to be in 18 months span. after that no..

The bigggest advantage for iOS and Windows phone is here. They get updates as long as possible... I feel Microsoft has an edge on this.. Microsoft said their last version of windows is windows 10.. now that it is released you will get continous update on the windows  phone... this was mentioned in a suttle way in the livestream...So i guess windows phone has an upper hand here...

The only reason, the difficulty to switch is if we start using one ecosystem, we are used to its serices.. but when we switch there is no first party apps for that services that makes the switch a difficult one...

Well this is why you choose a good company to buy from, screw htc, and sony if they don't want to manage security don't give them your business.

All devices dont get cynogen.. and many that does get do not work perfectly...

true, but it's good that it exists. my m8 is supported.

Why can't all Android phones just receive Android version update versions and security ones same like Nexus ones?

Why can't all Android phones just receive Android version update versions and security ones same like Nexus ones?

The way android works is that anyone can make modifications to it for their own handsets. It then becomes the responsibility of the handset maker to maintain their android "version". Google will maintain android itself, and their own Nexus line of handsets, but won't maintain the version of android for HTC devices - that's HTC's responsibility.

 

In an ideal world, all phones would run the exact same version of android and receive updates all at the same time. This doesn't happen because then handset makers need to make sure that the new update plays nicely with their handset, and that all of their bloatware continues to work.

 

 

Linux works the same way - you can make your own distro based on Ubuntu, but new releases of your distro are your responsibility, not the Ubuntu developers'.

Yeah sadly can't receive latest updates soon =/

Maybe manufacturers should enable vanilla version on each device heh.

The way android works is that anyone can make modifications to it for their own handsets. It then becomes the responsibility of the handset maker to maintain their android "version". Google will maintain android itself, and their own Nexus line of handsets, but won't maintain the version of android for HTC devices - that's HTC's responsibility.

 

In an ideal world, all phones would run the exact same version of android and receive updates all at the same time. This doesn't happen because then handset makers need to make sure that the new update plays nicely with their handset, and that all of their bloatware continues to work.

 

 

Linux works the same way - you can make your own distro based on Ubuntu, but new releases of your distro are your responsibility, not the Ubuntu developers'.

 

But how is Microsoft able to update any Windows phone, all running similar yet vastly different hardware, yet Google can't do the same?

Anybody can put android on a phone, but you can only put Windows on a phone with Microsoft's permission. Microsoft therefore has more control over the internals of the handsets than Google ever could with Android.
