New Setup Help! (Router, Switches, Streaming, oh my!)

sterlingr

Hello all!

I am moving into a new house early next year and will have the opportunity to finish off the basement however I'd like, Including a home theater (Yay!). I will also have the chance to build my network from the ground up. Before I continue, let me list out the things I want my network to be able to do and say that I have AT&T UVerse for my Internet @ 20mbps in Atlanta, GA.

  1. Deliver 20mbps service thorough my home via Wi-Fi (Ok duh...)
  2. Deliver a wired connection to my media closet for the theater
  3. Be able to stream video from device to device (Im thinking namely NVidia shadowplay and Xbox One/ Windows 10 game streaming with great quality

I would love that wired connection in my media closet to help with streaming and overall reliability in my network. As of now however, I use AT&T's modem/router combo unit which only supports b/g wireless and therefore 45mbps throughput total.

What are my options to get a higher throughput for in-home streaming? Add a third-party router and use my current AT&T router as a modem only? Also, Will running a single Ethernet cable from my router down to my theater closet and then useing a 5 port switcher work as well as I imagine?

Thank you all so much!

you should draw one of these. you can buy an switch such as a trendnet web smart. I am actually interested in this particular switch because you do not need to be an expert to operate it and its accessable via wifi. or you can buy something from best buy if you only need to switch up the connection and not control the connection.

I REALLY don't need something that elaborate, as the only wired connections I will be making are to a computer right next to my router, and the Ethernet run down to my theater. My main question is about how to get more throughput than my AT&T router provides. My second question is about the use of a simple 5 port 10/100/1000 switch in my theater closet.

Thank you all so much!

If you want better wireless all you need to do is pick up a Wireless access Point or two, depending on how much coverage you want. For running the cable I suggest cat6a as it is shielded so you can run it along a powerline if needed without worry of EMI and it will give you the ability to do a 10Gbps LAN if you so chose.

If you install multiple access points or you are planning to extend more wired connectivity you will need to pick up an ethernet switch with the desired number of ports.

Making a network diagram is always a good choice. Even if it is only a small network, knowing what you need and having a visualization of it will really help.

you wont need more than a gigabit switch. your pc and other components wont consume or use more than 100mb. if your talking about download speed, you only get as much as they give. if you want a good local network, that is dependant on your hardware/switch.

Understood that I won't get a faster internet connection, how how would I go about adding in a better router to my AT&T modem/router combo?

If I (Find out how to) Get a third party router that provides b/g/n, and also get an ethernet switch for my theater, should that be all I need for my needs?

Thank you both so much!

you are stuck with the modem your ISP gives you. if its just a modem you can buy a new router. if its a modem/router then you can just have a pass through to your switch or you can add a new router and just adjust the setting to bridge mode as you do not need DHCP. here is my setup:

internet - isp - isp modem - PF Sense router - switch - access point

                                                                                                 - secondary switch in living room - tv

                                                                                                 - bed rooms                                   - apple tv

                                                                                                 - unclaimed ports                          - cable
