File server program?

Go to solution Solved by Altecice,

Just share a folder using the built in share tab in the folders properties. (known as an SMB share)

I need a file server.

·         This file server should be a program that is installable on a windows 10 laptop

·         The specs are:

·         Intel Atom N550 dual core @1,5GHz (4 logical processors)

·         1gb ram (~700mb is used by windows)

·         200 GB available storage

·         Must be addable by an other windows 10 laptop as a network drive

·         The program must be free (not planning on using it commercial)

·         *optional* can be accesed through the internet *optional*

It does not need to be super fast (what could you expect with that laptop) it should just work.

Does anybody know a program that will do this?

Windows has in build features for sharing network drives.

Any FTP server software

  • ALFTP
  • Cerberus FTP Server
  • Complete FTP Server
  • CrushFTP
  • Filezilla Server
  • SFTPPlus

Or if you're just going to be sharing it over an internal network, then just setting it up as a shared folder in Samba will work, like the posts above said.

Eeh, by gum.

Are you planning on accessing this file server only on your local network or outside of the network as well?

If you only plan on accessing it on your local network, I would use the Windows Built-In features.  If you also plan on accessing it out of your network, I would setup a FileZilla server, which you can learn more about here:

Thank you very much, after a bit of mucking around with permissions I finally got it working.

And it works great!

200gb for a file server is tiny. also, putting it on a laptop is a bad idea.... cause then... your laptop will need to be running 24/7 so people can transfer files. the best option i have found though, is to make a network drive. you can do this in windows 10, however i use windows server 2012 r2

I like Computer Stuffs. Have you tried unplugging it and plugging it in again? Automation Expert (Bots, scripts, etc)! Add me on Xbox Live: JollyPlanet449 And on Steam!: Baxtmann Wanshow.tips is a cool place too

Whats even better is you can map the network share to drive on any PC you use it on in the house. You could also set up a private VPN and get access to the shares from anywhere.
