Hey guys,

This may have been answered before but I just would like to know in simple terms what exactly is Folding @ Home?

ON A 7 MONTH BREAK FROM THESE LTT FORUMS. WILL BE BACK ON NOVEMBER 5th.

Hey guys,

This may have been answered before but I just would like to know in simple terms what exactly is Folding @ Home?

Folding @ Home uses your computers processing power as well as many millions of other computers around the world to help find cures for diseases. Your computer as well as many others try and solve 'Proteins' to try and help find cures for these diseases.

Neither do I, my PC sounds like it'll take off. Need new fans  :lol: But what I do is, if I'm doing homework, I'll listen to music whist Folding on full mode (Uses pretty much EVERYTHING). It works for me, or I'll use my laptop while I'm folding on my PC. I like to think that if a cure is found by Stanford University, my PC will have helped to have found that cure.  ^_^

Ah! Okay. Full mode? Does the FAH software have different modes?

 

Yes, the new version has a slider rule. Default install has it on Medium, which means your CPU folds at about 87% leaving enough to do most things, but does not GPU fold unless your computer goes into Idle, meaning a screensaver kicks in.

 

You can change this to lower values, so it uses less CPU, or none at all unless you are Idle, or move it to Full, which ramps up the CPU to 99% and also starts the GPU folding. As mentioned above, if you have a decent system, you can even do most things while the slider is on Full, short of gaming or higher def videos say on YouTube.
