Intel I7 6700K real world preformance

With AMD's am3+ socked getting more and more outdated, I really had no choice but to switch to Intel, so I was wondering, how well does the I7 6700K preform with multitasking/ gaming and only being an 4 core CPU?

5820K - same price - better performance

Other than that - a quad core i5 is better than the 8350 in games - an i7 is better at heavier work

It has very good hyper threading so it does fine, if you really want more cores go 5820K on the x99 platform

skylake appareantly REALLY shines in single threaded applications tho.

SIGH the 8350E is also a real 4 module design. It uses fake cores with massively shared resources and compute units to call itself 8 cores. In reality it's much closer to a 4 core with HT than to even a 6 core with HT.

 

The 4790k is a good 30-50% better than the 8350e clock for clock and the 6700k is about 3-10% better than the 4790k.

All you really need as an upgrade is the i5 4460 or an locked i5 skylake

If you can afford a 6700k, chances are that you can afford a 5820k, which would be better.

 

In all honesty, people shouldn't buy the 6700k (and Intel agrees, you just can't find the thing for sale). We should all hop onto the 6600k - THAT's where skylake shines.

I know, that's why I didn't call them the same. But the module design for AMD is like 1 module (2 "core"s) =150% of 1 core, while for Intel's HT 1 HT core 2 threads = 110-130% 1 core non-HT.

That would depend on his current cpu and it's clock speed. A 6300 isn't going to beat a 4460 even on the most parallel processes.

Anyways... a 6700k is a bad upgrade imho. The 5820k and cheap x99 boards (which are still often better made than z170 boards of the same price point), gives much more performance under highly threaded loads and is pretty damn near on par with gaming even with dx11 (before overclocking, after OC both the 5820k beats the 6700k).

For gaming, i7-6700K will be at most 5% better than the 4790K and around 50?% faster than the 8320. In video editing, it's about 35% faster than the 8320 and like 0% faster than the 4790K.

Most people saying that they'll be rendering and multitasking, will actually render 5 minute 1080p videos 1-2 times a week and will have a few browser tabs and a music player in the background while playing games. If that's the case, get an i5 and enjoy your improved gaming experience.

X99 platform + CPU are quite a bit more expensive though, but if budget allows then obviously 6-core 12-thread 5820k is better for future-proofing

Although if OP wants to use mostly single-threaded applications, then get 6700k
