Be real with me, how much VRAM do I actually need?

DaPrimeRib

I don't plan on overclocking, only sticking to 1080p and would like to stick to the GTX 960 or R9 380 range and will be gaming quite casually so, BE REAL WITH ME, how much VRAM do I actually need for games such as witcher, bf4,mostly multiple steam games, shadow of mordor etc?

Also if I have to scale down settings to medium-high to play with good FPS with 2GB VRAM, I gladly shall.

You really only NEED 2GB's for now, however games are getting more difficult to run and within a year or two most if not all triple a titles are going to be using 3GB's of VRAM (or more at 1080p).

shadow of mordor will easily kill any gpu with 2GB VRAM

so 4GB is the minimum

I run 2gb fine for now, but as others have said, you might want to go 4gb for newer games. I recommend the R9-380 4gb version.

I was thinking that too. What settings do you think it will run for future games? high-really high? I'm only aiming for a medium-high price point.

I would think that it could run games at High for another couple of years at least.

If you don't mind lowering the settings then 2GB is enough though that's not really an ideal option.

As others have said you need 2 GB right now.  However we have a short list of game titles that break right through the 2 GB limit at 1080p ultra and that list looks to be getting longer.

Given the current price of a AMD product with 4 GB or 8 GB of VRAM, there really isn't much reason to buy a new card with less than that.  If budget is a major concern and you're fine with medium, I might suggest going as cheap as a GTX 750Ti class card and start saving for the new architecture cards coming in Q3 or Q4 2016.

Would a GTX 950 be a good choice for medium settings in the future then?

nope i say

the R9 380 is a killer card that beats the GTX960 which is 1 tier higher the 950

How about getting a GTX 960 2gb  just for now? It's really cheap at my area.

like i said the R9 380 kills the 960 in all games

in fact the 380 can handle 1080P Ultra

It's really cheap for a reason, let me put it that way.  I'd only buy it was significantly cheaper than a R9 380 and you only needed 12 to 18 months out of the 960 before you planned on upgrading it.
