best unplanned modifications while building a computer

So i was wondering if anyone else was building a computer and had to make an unplanned modification to get it to fit together?

 

After two years of having my computer i finally decide that its time for my first upgrade, the cpu cooler. i bought a h100i to cool the a10 processor. After i opened the box i realized that my case didn't support a 240mm rad. Being the fix it yourself no matter what the cost kind of person that i am i decided the best thing to do would be to drill out the case and make my own mounting and vent holes. After i drill out the four corners for the rad mount I find out that i didn't have the rite size bit for the vent holes, I decided that i would just cut vents in the case with the reciprocating saw. Turns out that you cant make a perfectly straight cut with the saw blade that i was using, so i now have a messy looking but very functional vent in the top of my computer.

I realized I didn't order a case

really I just didn't order my H440, ended up using a old half height case with most of the stuff dremeled out

Recommend what is best, not what you preffer.

reversing the airflow because cooler and RAM don't fit.

Bought a NZXT Phantom 820 (white)... then i regretted not getting a H440 for its sound dampening properties...

So i got a tad pissed and went out, bought the sound dampening material myself and sound dampened my entire 820 myself (ok, i had a little help from a friend)...

 

it so happens i did this the same day i swapped from FX 8320 and a 990FX Sabertooth to a Maximus VII HERO mobo and a Core i7 4790k

Not really a modification, but I had to put two of the fans for my radiator on the outside of my air 540 rather than inside.

Ketchup is better than mustard.

GUI is better than Command Line Interface.

Dubs are better than subs

Taping an SSD to a Hard drive taped on the backside of a GPU with a fan suspended by wires blowing on it.

traded a dead mobo & processor for a working mobo & processor, then i realised the working one was full sized ATX...

didnt come with an io shield, the VGA card is in the second slot on the mobo, and third slot in the case.

but hey, it works...

 

also, thats a HP power supply, and HP has the tendency to make their wires "perfect length"

which is all fine and good until you put it in a flipped mobo case...

 

the hump up top is a hotswap bay turned inside out to make room for where the old power supply used to be, before it caught fire...

Check out my Z11 build log, The whole log is unplanned modifications haha. When I first got my 2 r9 290x's as a replacement for my old gpu's I had to dremel out the hard drive cages in order to get them to fit. Also the top supports 240mm radiators but only with thin fans, but I said nope. So I modded the fins on top of the case to allow them to fit even with normal width 120mm fans(check out the z11 club thread on overclockers.net and you will see how many people have that issue) I think I'm the first to do this, or at least the first to post about it. That build still has more updates to come, including painting the fins on the top of the case and the graphics cards.

I had to slice and dice my case up to fit my loop. Both 120 & 240mm rad and the top shroud spots needed cutting even to fit the rads on the outside of the case, especially the 240 there is almost nothing left. My pump sits on a bracket over a old homemade fan slot in the bottom of my case, only instead of a fan i fit a filter in there cause it was easier and i kinda liked the idea of the lowest point in my coling system having a drain of sorts that would keep water from pooling up inside the case.

Bonus: find pics of my gpu, i guess it was premeditated but i would not say planned
