i reckon in a few years it will be possibly to go full ssd without having to sacrifce a ton of storage space at a reasonable cost.

also would people be interested in motherboards that have say a 120gb/256gb ssd built into the board

I thought the ultra fast ssds would have a much higher premium. I am personally exited to see this drives but not only because of the drives themselves but because it probably means Samsung with release newer 2.5 inch drives or lower the price of the 850evo meaning that now it's completely feasible to have a fast 2.5 drive as regular storage and a really fucking fast boot and install drive, leaving mechanicals behind.

70-80 cents per dollar, affordable? I think not. It's no cheaper than the already available NVMe drives, and it's way over twice as expensive as SATA SSDs. I mean, by enterprise standards it's not bad, but this is a consumer product.

Saw this yesterday on pcper. Looks amazing. Finally a high performance M.2 SSD with black PCB. Is the price better than the 951 then?

 

Only caveat is that this drive will thermo throttle too. Why not put on a simple heatshield like on RAM? Or at least not have a sticker on the actual controller chip, so it's easy to put on a small heatsink with adhesive. I would so do that if I got that drive.

 

About the same price as the SM951. A bit disappointing, but SSD models often get significantly cheaper over time.

Yeah sounds expensive. But it was an OEM drive that the retailers had to get through odd channels, so this drive should have been cheaper. I hope you're right though as these drives are expensive enough in Denmark (man burde importere fra England eller noget).

That'll be about a dollar per GB here in Aus, ouch, but also, ooooooooooooh. 

Lets hope that's not true then it would be like the 750 series ssd at over a GB per dollar.

I bought a 256GB Crucial MX100 for 666 kroner last year, today the cheapest decent SSD is the (slower) BX100 for 658. Det er fandme uhyggeligt du.

 

Anyway, 200 USD is 1337 DKK, add 25% VAT and that's 1670 DKK. The 256GB SM951 (AHCI version, unfortunately) is already available for 1495 DKK, so it almost looks like we're in for higher prices. <_<

Oh well, at least availability will improve dramatically. Especially in smaller markets like Denmark.

To be fair the AHCI version IS cheaper than the nvme version of 951, but I would like for Samsung to lower the prices. We need a price war on SSD's.

As an ex owner of one that had problems and went through the hoops, I can assure you that they did. Atleast on the consumer side, not sure about the business support. 

 

I had to return it to the retailer that sold it to me, switched it out for a Intel 750. 

 

It's good that this new one gets the same support as it's sata brethren. Same warranty support as well, nice peace of mind when buying. 

 

You do understand that is the whole idea of OEM parts right?  That the makers themselves do not support it.  You get support from the person/company you purchased the item from.  Essentially, you get support from whomever you give your money to, unless the seller has made other arrangements.  The warranty goes to whoever buys the item, you didn't buy the SSD, the retailer did, and you bought the system from the retailer.  Thus your warranty is with the retailer, and the retailer's warranty is with Samsung.  That is why Samsung would not support you, you didn't buy it from them.

There would be some sort of support, like NVIDIA forums or an email or something. I did go to the retailer, told me to go to Samsung..  

Asked several others in the UK here as well, told me basically the same thing, whether the sales reps answering got it wrong, i'm not sure, but the technical support rep of the place I brought it from told me to go to Samsung. 

 

Even though, there are some smidgen of acknowledgement of existence but with this...completely denied it.

Finally more NVMe consumer options. More are very likely to follow during the weeks to come. By the end of the year we will have a decent amount of alternatives to choose from, as well as see some competition (on warranty, price, accessories, performance...).

You need to add VAT to the price. So it would cost closer to £160 in the UK.
