Is cpu development speeding anytime soon

Intel has nothing pushing them to make any big jumps. They've dominated the high end CPU market for a while now, with only small improvements to performance each generation, as they don't really have a reason to invest huge amounts of money on big jumps forward. Hopefully Zen will be something special and kick the high end CPU market into gear.

That's exactly what they've done though. The difference is, they converted their "jumps" into smaller dies and higher profit margins. And more die space taken up by iGPU.

And for those who care; lower power consumption.

 

No matter how good ZEN is, Intel will have something ready to immediately one-up it by a small fraction.

 

Hopefully though, ZEN will get a good marketshare on niche alone. No iGPU, higher core count. Hopefully also more PCIe lanes than Intel's consumer offerings. 32 would be great.

Raw performance gains in game/application benchmarks are not the only direction for CPU development to progress. What a monopoly would look like is Skylake launching as another literal refresh of Haswell with a price increase… same memory controller with no DDR4 support, 16 PCIe lanes, no USB 3.1, no DMI 3.0, voltage regulator still on the die, etc. None of the new Skylake stuff is actually needed to compete with AMD, so clearly that is not Intel's only motivation.

If you are waiting for a good AMD CPU that will challenge the best of intel's line up you will have a long wait

i know thats a big possibilty, but i really want someone to buy AMD like google, samsung, or microsoft, since they have the money to put towards cpu development

Yes and because of that modern processors development has flatlined with the 2500k and the 2600K being competitive with latest chips

Samsung would be nice, they certainly have the resources. I dont want google or microsoft owning them because they will just do something silly like put advertising or tracking software on the CPU's as their obsessed with owning your personal data

Intel's competition is ARM, not AMD. Hence the push for lower power consumption instead of for higher performance desktop processors.
