What CPU should I buy that has 3.1Ghz - 3.5Ghz? Which can be overclocked? Thanks!

well... you should pick processor based on amount of cores you need, not based on clock speed...

what'll you be using it for?

No.. You should pick a CPU based on how well it performs in the task you want to do.

That being said, whengtotsz, what will you do with the CPU? What kind of budget do you have?

well, kinda worded that wrong i guess... i kinda meant to say "based on the amount of cores your workload can efficiently use" indicating an 8-core for FSX is a joke, as is rendering on pentiums.

Xeon E3-1231 V3

Can't be overclocked, but it has hyperthreading and 8 threads, 4 cores.

I5 4690k Can overclock, but no hyperthreading. 4 threads, 4 cores.

and the xeon can be boosted to 3.8 ghz. that said, for gaming, i would recommend an i-series over a workstation cpu

I will be using it for gaming. If possible can you guys put the link so I know the price. hehe thank you!

But what is you budget?

If you don't state your budget I will just recommend stuff like this:

The easy recommendation for gaming with overclocking features is either the Core i5-4690K or i5-6600K. Exactly what to recommend is going to depend on your local pricing, and we can't really assume everyone's in the U.S. on this forum.

Edit: Fixed, thanks Minibois.

Cheapest=4460-$175

Best that can be used for gaming=6600k-$230(?) but the 6600k won't even do much over a 4460 even when overclocked

Ignore clock speed, it isn't a measure of how much performance you'll get. A 3.0 haswell cpu is faster than a 3.5 ghz Sandy bridge cpu.

Having said that, look for a haswell cpu with the amount of cores you need (i5 for gaming, i7 for making videos etc) and if you want an overclock, get a chip that ends with a k and a z97 motherboard

The base frequency means nothing if you can overclock. If you get a k-series, you'll be more than likely hitting 4,4 Ghz at the very least with a decent cooler

Like above, I'd recommend the Asus z97 line. They are great boards for a good price. I have the Asus z97-A and I swear by that board. I've always loved Asus mobos but this one blew me away for the price.

Yeah, it should work too, i just happen to prefer Asus, but as long as you get z97 you're fine. The cooler...again, budget. I think a good point for you is a 50 dollar cooler, like a thermalright macho

http://www.amazon.com/Thermalright-814256001052-Macho-Rev-B/dp/B00PKJ21LW/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1442723387&sr=1-1&keywords=thermalright+macho

That's an excellent cooler at a very good price

http://www.amazon.com/Thermalright-True-Spirit-140-Rev/dp/B00O6AEQNW/ref=sr_1_5?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1442723387&sr=1-5&keywords=thermalright+macho

Very similar to the macho, maybe better memory clearence but taller

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4UF30R0134&cm_re=cryorig-_-9SIA4UF30R0134-_-Product

Another alternative, also an excellent cooler

If you are willing to spend more i recomend either a dual heatsink or an AIO

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4UF1H68938&cm_re=cryorig-_-9SIA4UF1H68938-_-Product

http://www.amazon.com/Noctua-NH-D15-Premium-Cooler-Cooling/dp/B00L7UZMAK/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1442723716&sr=1-1&keywords=noctua+d15

http://www.amazon.com/Phanteks-Heat-pipes-Premium-Patented-PH-TC14PE_BK/dp/B007ZZE63A/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1442723738&sr=1-1&keywords=phanteks+ph-tc14pe

http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Performance-Liquid-Cooler-CW-9060021-WW/dp/B00SV7IEJI/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1442723766&sr=1-1&keywords=corsair+h110i+gt

From Corsair, the H105 should be more than enough, it's priced decently and it doesn't come with corsair link, which to be honest, it's annoying and not noob friendly. The cooler master 240M or Enermax Liqtech are good options too

http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-Radiator-Silencio-RL-N24M-24PK-R2/dp/B00PG8QHKI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1442723914&sr=8-1&keywords=nepton+240m

http://www.amazon.com/Enermax-LIQTECH-Pre-Filled-Coolant-ELC-LT240-HP/dp/B00JD4TDDE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1442723939&sr=8-1&keywords=enermax+liqtech+240

Overall dude, if you're buying an i5 and a 100ish mobo, get a 50 bucks cooler like the Macho, True Spirit or H5 Universal. They will cool all you need without breaking the bank.
