Single 970 duh.

Which should I do? SLI two 950s, two 960s, or a single 970?

Thanks

I would go with an AMD R9 390!

Never do SLI unless you are doing top tier card.

Scaling is a huge issue with SLI and XFire works better, but I wouldn't suggest either.

The rule of thumb is always to buy the single most powerful card you can buy. Afterwards, then you can ask if it's better to SLI or upgrade to the next best single card.

970. never buy sli off the bat unless its the very high end, or one tier down from top end

Well technically the 980ti is the second level card from nvidia now. It really depends on the generation, as for the 700 series, as getting dual 770s wouldn't be great.

I wouldn't SLI anything under a 970, and that's a stretch. Get the 970.

Single 970 would be better than SLI 960s for sure.
