Video card upgrade dilemma

Hendrics
Go to solution Solved by stencebeast32,

So, still a bit hazy, but I think you may have nailed this one Nena360, just getting a regular AMD 390 for my secondary rig and leaving my main gaming rig with the 2x GTX 770 SLI until more info is released about Nvidia and dx12.

I fully agree with this. Just my two cents.

So I am currently building another PC for casual use, not hardcore AAA ultra graphics machine, but I am looking to upgrade my current gaming rig, so I'm going to hand down my i5 4690k and one of two GTX 770s to the rig,

Im planning on getting an i7 4790k (either on sale or ebay deal) just to get more power into the main rig.

My problem is deciding on what would be an upgrade to my current GTX 770 SLI setup? I've always had Nvidia cards and have been a fan, but with the DX 12 uncertainty and games that will be using async. I've heard that it can / cant be fixed with drivers, but Nvidia says it can, BUT, who knows.

I like the prices on the AMD cards right now, so the 390x is looking pretty good to me right now, 8gb of vram, and I have high hopes for what AMD cards hold for the future of DX 12.

On the other hand I love the power of Nvidia cards, but not a huge fan of their prices, and  I'm not sure they will get the async thing sorted with drivers and good compatibility with DX 12 (until nex gen / refresh cards)

What do you guys think? What would be an upgrade from 2x GTX 770s for AAA gaming and 1440p?

Either a 980 or a 390x would be more than enough for 1440p. The price/performance is about the same for both cards and 8GB vs 4GB of VRAM is not really relevant for 1440p at this time. DX12 does seem like it will favor AMD cards but remember that this will only really affect future games as most current games support DX11 or lower and will likely not be updated. Look at the features of each card and decide which ones are more important to you for your decision.

I've built 3 PC's, but none for myself... In fact, I'm using an iMac that my dad bought for me as my desktop. Awkward...

Please don't say "SSD drive." By doing so, you are literally saying "Solid State Drive Drive" and causing my brain cells to commit suicide. The same applies to HDD (Hard Disk Drive) and PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express).

980ti if you can for fun buy honestly go with a 390/x if your ok with the power consumtion the 980 is not good price/performace the 390x is as good and even better in some situations while being cheaper.

At the moment i don't have a 1440p monitor, but that will be soon. I just downsample some games to 1440 to get by. I play arma 3 and am still going thru far cry 4 (as far as fps games go).

So right now i think i am leaning toward a 390x than, and if it doesn't preform as well as the 2 gtx 770s, I'll just get another 390 (not really)

I just think it's AMDs time to shine

Nobody knows what's going on with async. A lot of people are jumping the gun and saying nvidia doesn't really have async. It probably does.

It still leaves me up in the air though. I don't want to sink a ton of money into a GPU that "may" not work well with dx12 as games are being developed currently.

I was looking more into the 390x, and yes, it is a power hog (i think pauls hardware quoted he was pulling 500w at max), which I dont mind, however if one day I want to crossfire them, im not sure if my 1000w power supply would be up to running both of them (with my 7 case fans and AIO water cooler)

My brain is beginning to lock up, I feel a BSOD coming on...

To be honest, I would wait to see what happens with the DX12 before doing anything. If you need something now, I would recommend the 390x because of Nvidia's DX12 controversy.

Yeah, i just don't want to see a downgrade in graphicds on my main rig by ditching the 770 sli i currently have.

But one option i have not explored is not upgrading the gpus on my main rig, and just buying a mid grade card for the new pc...

Abandon Nvidia ship! JK lol no really a 390 is fine! Or a 390X if you do not mind getting or have a 750W PSU... :P (550-650W is fine for 390 non-x)

Hahaha, I am kind of thinking that Nena360, not only for the dx12 fiasco, but it has just been so long since i've owned an ATI... ahem... AMD video card, that I am wanting to go get back with em to see how it is.

Its just that nagging thought in the back of my head, do I get I high end AMD GPU for my main rig, or a lesser mid ranged AMD GPU for the secondary rig i'm building. I wont be playing AAA titles on the secondary rig, so I wont be getting an X for that for sure!

I really dont want to wait on building my secondary rig just because im going to be using it in conjunction with my work CPU setup (just to have a 2nd work station to watch twitch, play moba's, netflix, ect) and I want that to be up and running ASAP

But sinking money into the 390x at this moment for my main rig, and possibly xfiring it down the road, just dosnt seem like a wise decision right now (just a 290x w more memory)

So, still a bit hazy, but I think you may have nailed this one Nena360, just getting a regular AMD 390 for my secondary rig and leaving my main gaming rig with the 2x GTX 770 SLI until more info is released about Nvidia and dx12.

I want to mark as answered, but I still want to hear more opinions on what you guys would do / think
