Best GPU for a 2560x1440 Monitor Radeon R9 390 good?

I am building my first PC and I want to make sure everything in it is the most bang for the buck. I decided to get a Asus PB278Q 60Hz 27.0" Monitor 2560x1440 resolution for my Monitor. I plan on doing a decent amount of gaming as well as using the computer for coding and programs for school. I decided to go with the Asus Radeon R9 390 8gb Graphics Card as of now, but do you guys have any suggestions on any better GPU's for around the same price that will run very good on my monitor?

Also if there is any adjustments to the computer as a whole you would make without sacrificing too much performance that would be great. I am opened to all suggestions. (Would also like to keep the computer around the same price give or take $50 and would like to keep the black/red theme)

This is the build I have right now.

R9 Fury is the lowest I would go for 21:9 1440p.

It is only 16:9.

An AMD cpu has no place in a solely gaming build, end of.

I3 4150, Intel HD graphics, corsair CX750M, 4gb ram, Asus H81M-E, corsair 230T, Intel stock cooler WD Green 2TB Gigabyte 550TI

390 is pretty solid, i get silly framerates at 1080p, even in Witcher 2 with ubersampling which is basically 4K??? i get 45-60FPS maxed.

Sorry I'm super tired, still would recommend Fury if you want to fully utalize 1440p 60hz.

Agreed.

1440p? Get a GTX 980 Ti! I'm gaming on 1600p and I do photoprocessing on the side. My rig is detailed in my sig. It costs me in the neighborhood of 1,370usd. I got my parts for good prices because I bought half of them used. They came from owners who only kept the parts for 2-3 months. What a steal on my part.

I modified your partlist: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Raccatography/saved/#view=Vxxqqs

Change log:

  • CPU Cooler: Air cooler is cheaper and more durable. Noctuas look ugly but they have an image of quality ;)
  • Ram: Just get 8GB in single channel for now. Get the second stick down the line. I play BF4 on my rig in 1600p and it can handle it.
  • SSD: The BX100 is the budget SSD of Crucial but it's one of the best bang for your buck kind of deal. It's fairly new so it performs well.
  • HDD: The blacks are noisier and more power hungry. The blues are a good compromise. Speed difference between the two isn't noticeable anyways.
  • Keyboard and Mouse: Picked the cheapest quality ones I found!

Would you rather have a 390 with nice looking peripherals? Or would you rather have a 980 Ti with OKAY looking peripherals?

EDIT: This fits exactly within your budget headroom of 1937usd. Haha!

Just no - cheaping out on half your stuff for a card that doesn't justify it is pointless since a 390 is more than enough for 1440p.

Think about the way I "cheaped" out. I picked the best bang for the buck parts. R9 390 will struggle and the GTX 980 Ti will breeze through 1440p - that's its territory.

  • Noctuas are "cheap" and ergo low quality? Their 6-year warranty and Linus's love for them says otherwise.
  • BX100 is rated well on review sites. It's fairly cheap because Crucial has their own foundry for SSD components.
  • WD Caviar Blue is the first thing you'll see in PCPartPicker HDD list and well rated as well. It's one of the fastest 1TB HDD's out there.
  • Keyboard and mouse are just peripherals. If they're above 20usd, then they're good enough

The 850 Evo is one of the best SSDs and I would strongly suggest against replacing it.

Blacks are pretty good in my opinion - but I'd suggest Reds. Best stability

He chose them because he likes them. I dropped 60$ on my keyboard, so what? I like it. That's personal preference.

He should get a 390X or Fury - 980 Ti is not worth in this case. Both of those cards can run anything @ 60 fps.

Mouse is pretty good btw - I've been using for 2 years now. No regrets or problems with it but get a better PSU - the G2 or GS series from EVGA. NEX are meh.

If you want a constant 60FPS i dont think the 390 will cut it.

The 290/390 was made for 1440p Gaming, I've had a few 290's and 290x's, for 1080p & 1440p, and it was borderline overkill @ 1080p (cept shitty ports needing brute force)

The 290-OC/GTX970 I have currently, do not get 60fps in all titles in 1440p mode, majority of 1080p games will smash the 60fps mark, and stay there or above.

But in 1440p, maintaining 60fps (as minimums) you'd need more than the latest 390 can provide (if your a MAXED OUT 4-8xAA type person)

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Dont get me wrong,290/390/X will suffice,....with closer to 60fps as minimums in a lot of titles,.... if you lower AA from 4-8xMSAA to 0-2xMSAA

In games that dont have AA (then lower HBAO to SSAO or something relatively similar, not OFF, but reduced, still nice) and them boom, frames have a nice gain in most games.

First of all thank you all for responding, I left my computer expecting not to get a lot of responses and I came back to a ton!

Based upon all of your suggestions I am leaning more to the R9 Fury. I also decided to go to 250gb on the SSD and go with a air cooler instead of the liquid cpu cooler. I also changed the power supply to a G2 based on what a few of you mentioned.

This is my revised build.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2NLTcf

I don't really know much about keyboards but I would like to spend a little less money on one. I think I want a mechanical keyboard that isn't too loud and is less than the one I have in my revised build which is about $70. Preferably I would like to stick with the black/red theme but plain black with white backlighting would be fine.

Thanks so much to all of you for answering! I did not expect this much feedback.

I have a ps4 right now so I am used to console games so I am not exactly sure what games I will be playing. I would not be playing competitively but I would like a keyboard that will perform well and last me a while. Do you thinks I should get a less expensive keyboard now and then upgrade as I go?
