Dear cyclists, if you ride on the roads like this:

I dislike you and will not wait for you or give way to you.

People sometimes cycle besides each other not to be an assholes but to protect themselves by not giving the driver a chance of overtaking in narrow roads. Basically mimicking the size of a car and if it is too narrow to overtake a car you should not overtake a cyclist as the law say you have to give cyclist as much space as a car. Learn the law please before putting your opinions on what is right and wrong on your actions

I get that, but it's not very nice to do.

2 days ago I was cycling and almost got run over by a truck who was driving way too close to me.. but that doesn't mean I should drive with 2 others next to me

I can understand that. However, on backroads where there's blind corners and cars often drive in the middle of the road, as there's no marking, it is very dangerous for cyclists to do that.

The law is to give them as much room as you would give a car, which should be around a door's width or at least a metre. If the cyclists are riding in single file, you can easily give them that room. If they are riding across the road, it is much harder to give them enough room.

There is also a law stating that cyclists should never ride more than two abreast, and that cyclists should ride in single file when on narrow and busy roads. Motorists must learn the law before being allowed on the roads, and cyclists should have to  do the same IMO, if only for the laws on cycling.

meh he's from the UK too, the tabloid media and gutter press has created and then poured fuel on some kind of highly polarised unending war on the roads between drivers and cyclists... it's obviously complete bollocks but has rather skewed the opinions and mindsets of entire generations here.

It's not that. I have no issue with cyclists, provided they ride responsibly and obey the law, rather than riding all across the road and jumping red lights. I used to drive to Henley for work, and there are a hell of a lot of cyclists that ride 4 abreast on backroads and jump red lights because they don't know the law regarding cyclists.

Hell, I cycle myself from time to time and most drivers give you plenty of room, provided you ride responsibly and don't always act like you have right of way for some reason.

Can we get back on topic and talk about positive things to do with cycling; instead of talking about the laws to do with cycling

EDIT: We can talk about things such as La Vuelta...

I have license and I drive from time to time. Cycle more as it is quicker around london. I don't jump the lights and try stay out of overtaking buses. Driving a car has thought me to etiquette on the road and I think people should go at least minimal course before stepping on the road, but one small detail changes everything. When I'm in my car I'm pretty careful and try to anticipate the crash happening, but if it will happen I'm in a around 2t. well engineered, air bag fitted aluminum box. When I'm cycling and I'm in a crash... doesn't matter if it is my fault, someones else fault... there is a high chance that I will die. That's the reasoning I can understand when some ride one besides each other or even more. I don't ride on coutry side a lot, but when I do I try to stay in the middle of lane. Last time when I was of to the side I was couple centimeters from run over by an old granny in her new peogeot. I'm pretty sure she didn't think that I can be hurt or that I have a family of my own. She just thought that oncoming car is still far enough for her to overtake, but when she understood that she was wrong she turned into me. 99% are great or reasonable drivers... F*ck it, just too depressing....

YES!

I have been waiting patiently for someone to make this thread. I have a mountain bike, for exercise, and I have been wondering: how do I use the gears sufficiently? Does higher numbers make it harder to pedal up a hill, or easier? I can't seem to notice a difference in any of my three (new) mountain bikes when I switch gears. However, there is also friction settings and I have no idea what that does either.

Help?

But I ride sometimes at the (near)middle because the dips on the sides of the road are too dangerous to risk riding next to. :cricri

I live in London, UK so find myself cycling absolutely everywhere. In a big city bikes make a lot more sense than private motor vehicles so are a hugely liberating thing to have. I commute by bike, go shopping by bike, even socialise by bike in big group ride events. Critical Mass London attracts 2000-4000 people during summer months so is always a blast.

I currently have 4 bikes but am likely to narrow it down to 3 soon. Lightweight road bike for weekend and city rides (boardman roadsport 2012), hybrid commuter bike (boardman mx sport 2014), a fatbike for messing around from time to time (on-one fatty v1) and an electric bike for lazy long chillout rides (Custom Stealth ebike).

I also have a car for the rare occasions where i need to transport bulky or heavy things around, 99% of the time it's parked up and unloved though :)

I'm on a horse...

I stopped riding down here, even with bike lanes. People text and drive, constantly drift into that lane, and run red lights.

That being said, the bikes I had:

Specialized Allez Elite (sold)

Surly Long Haul Trucker (sold)

Motobecane Fantom Cross is the bike that fits best, but it's collecting dust at the moment :(

I might get a MTB and hit the trails though, as that seems like a safer alternative around here.
