It all makes sense now.

Linus has (preemptively) confessed to having an Ashley Madison account on the latest WAN-show and claimed that someone else had used his E-Mail address to register without his knowledge, stating that the site doesn't send a confirmation E-Mail. Following that logic the legitimacy of that account cannot be proven.

However! The accounts' respective credit card information that is among the data that was leaked CAN be used to prove identity.

Recently Linus "accidentally" had his credit card visible in a photo on twitter Instagram and stated in a video that he had to cancel said credit card because of that.

That raises the question whether he purposely leaked his credit card information, knowing that it might be leaked by the hackers.
