Man, you guys have no idea how badly this thing needs an SSD. Windows 8.1 takes roughly 2 and a half MINUTES to boot.

 

If I had money, I would throw a 120GB SP920 or 240GB BX200 in it.

Everything I own either needs to have a fast HDD or an SSD. Way back when the 840 EVO rolled out I bought the 120GB model for my netbook lmao

My 7950 hasn't had pads on the ram for god knows how long and it's still fine.

580 heatsink works on 480.

Oh wow, I've never hated hard drives as much as I do now.

 

I was playing CS:GO with a buddy of mine, and the hard drive is so painfully slow that it somehow killed CS:GO. Now I have a 2 hour cooldown.

 

This thing legitimately needs an SSD, and I don't have money. RIP.

Try using a Segate U5 for any period of time. Its really noisy and slow. However since what you have is a lot newer, try doing a complete reformat (that's where the XP installer is good, or Linux off a USB) as when my WD Blue 1TB and Seagate Baracuda 2TB were getting slow, a complete reformat really speed them up (70-90MB/sec increased back to 185-177MB/sec respectively).

I did a 35? pass with CCleaner with it in my rig and then I went and did a zero fill and its still slow as ass. Doesn't matter now though. I'm using my beat to death 7200.10 (also 80GB) which is louder, and its fine.

 

Different note, I had a little fun with the 480 today. I think it's being held back by thermals and is just running too hot, but this is what I got it up to.

I've actually got a 160GB 7200.9 in my Xbox (or had as of yesterday) and I can say this right now, your 80GB and my 160GB will both be faster than the (recently deceased) Seagate Baracuda ATA IV in my Mum's chipped Xbox-and they both will run cooler than my Baracuda 2TB. And the HDD shouldn't be loud, my 7200.9 is silent unless its handling a lot of small files.

 

And that's still not bad for Thermi.

My ATA IV was actually moderately fast (usually pushed the limits of ATA 100 amazingly). It ran HOT tho.

 

I can honestly say though that the 1TB Barracuda in my main rig is incredibly cool and quiet, especially compared to every other hard drive I own.

Must be due to the amount of platters. If I remember correctly, more of them=more heat+noise.

Not in the case of my WD Blue. As I remember that only has something like 1 platter.

Yep. That's what they have in the 1TB WD Blue. Very lightweight too due to the build quality being far below that of the old Samsung Spinpoint drives. Thick cast steel base with a thick steel plate on top.

I have now used this heat producing monster for about a week and a half exclusively, and it honestly feels incredibly weird to be sitting back in front of my main rig.

 

I forgot how fast it was, how fast things loaded... Everything. It feels like I moved to a new house and got a whole new PC to go with it, to be honest.

 

Even though I love how quiet my rig is and how it performs (after all, there isn't a Q6600 holding everything back), I kinda miss the hot loudness of my 480. If it weren't for drivers being stupid, I would probably end up switching between the two cards in my daily rig.

That's kind of what its like for me and my Xeon X5450+GTX 650ti. Both are on, loan to a friend but I really miss the 650ti.

No, tell those Netburst Xeons to bugger off. My Pentium M770 is only slighlty slower than 1 of them on its own, and it runs at only 2.2GHz and consumes 29W of power (my Pentium III 1000EB on the other hand literally can't be clocked high enough to match them, but they still win clock for clock and because of the Abit VP6 and its jumperless overclocking.)

I agree, the only thing that they were good at was creating heat.

Well this was a rather unexpected twist. Long story short, the power delivery on my 7950 is probably taking a dump and it was causing insane interference with my rear panel audio, so I swapped the cards so that my main rig has the 480, and this has the 7950. Pics will come tomorrow more than likely, since I'll hopefully have more light.

So apparently all the pics I posted a month ago got deleted. That's fucking fantastic. I'll grab them again tomorrow.

Welp, bad news time: The motherboard in this build is just going south FAST. Things are refusing to work, and drives will fall out and it will take literally dozens of reboots to get it to boot at all, where there's a chance things will end up being corrupted.

 

And of course, I don't have the 20 bucks or so it takes to replace the board, so I guess I have to deal with an EXTREMELY spotty HTPC.
