After having a discussion with you I hear that doesn't happen very often.

Heh, it depends. My mom is the worst for actually ordering it. As in, I give her money and then 3 weeks later she might order it.

 

My dad is usually on top of things, but lately he's been sucking dick. Like, I've been waiting a month or more for an Xbox 360 which is sitting in our freakin living room. "I'm waiting for a transfer cable." That's his excuse.

 

Supposedly, the rest of the thermal pads I need and the "transfer cable" are supposed to get here today, but I have my doubts about it.

Good news and bad news: The thermal pads arrived! The bad news: The old ones were too thick.

 

My dad accidentally ordered 1 mil thick ones, and as it turns out, the 1.5 mil thick ones are too thick (it bends the PCB). So, back to waiting on something that my mom was supposed to order MONTHS ago.

Well, this is the current state of this beast. I'm spending a lot of time on cable management since this case is somewhat poo. Quick note: Everything under the top drive is covered in duct tape, and there are little tabs under the other two drives, which are covered in electrical tape.

Nope. Just some leftovers from when I had it in a crappier case and had to put one on it.

Teeny update: I figured out that my Zalman CNPS 9900 MAX that has been sitting around for months with no use actually works with a stock backplate. So no more low profile. Now we have a cooler that is a super tight fit. And the temps are so much better. No more 70+C load temps!

I threw in my CNPS 9900 MAX and it just BARELY fits. Along the way, I changed out the drives for better ones, put in a DVD Drive, and all of that good jazz. Oh, and did a test fit of the 480 that I still can't use. As you can tell, it looks a lot less stupid with this nice cooler in there.

 

 

 

 

 

Now as you can see, without the shroud, the card fits.

 

 

But, with the shroud... It doesn't fit. Unless I unplug the ODD.

 

 

 

I also put in a little LED strip up top and it actually looks pretty nice.

 

 

And the LED on the fan... mmm. It's so nice.

Card isn't actually running. Still waiting on thermal pads (thanks mom!).

 

I was planning on making it just a backup rig so that if for whatever reason mine gets irritable I have a backup.

Technically my 7950 still needs them since all but 1 RAM chip is naked, but it seems to be perfectly fine even overclocked, so I'm not worried.

Yea I found a 100 piece set of pads for $0.99 on ebay with free shipping from china so who knows when they will show up

I'm one of those stingy assholes that only gets the good crap. As in 11W/mK good. Shit keeps my VRMs on my 7950 frosty.

Well, all but one RAM chip may be naked, but that isn't gonna stop me! I've had enough, and I want to use my 480. So, I wonder if it works...

I think if I was missing a RAM chip I would have some issues.

 

But seriously, only one chip has a pad on it (both this build and my daily), and I just want to be super careful about my 480, since after all, it is an Engineering Sample.

Time to go look at some Quadros.

 

And if the 580 uses the same PCB possibly some dead 580s.

 

And honestly I'm not that worried about the RAM ATM since I don't plan on pushing it much right now.

Naw PCB is different. Quadro 5000 is what shares the heatsink. You really shouldn't be running w/o thermal pads at all though. 

RIP 580 idea.

 

I mean, so far everything is happy, and the power delivery has pads which is what matters the most.

 

My 7950 hasn't had pads on the ram for god knows how long and it's still fine.
