Electricity isn't free in any case.

solar power and wind are essentially free, hydro power isn't so far in development yet so I won't add it for now.

I leave my pc on 24/7 the power it uses on idle is around the same as a single burning light bulb anyway.

I can't remember what i was arguing about on another forum but when i suggested a pc should be turned off i was told by several people that 'nobody they knows turns their pc off at night'

To which I would say everyone they know is either an asshole or a thief.

None of those are free either. You can only form that counterargument based on the fact if man ends, everything else does; ergo sun is free because it will outlive humanity.

You can maybe make a case for Tidal power as being indirectly free.

lol, people on this forum love over thinking things to try and make themselves  seem correct, anyway we shouldn't really go about it in someone else's thread, if you want to continue send me a PM.

I can try to explain it without sounding philosophical, but you seem no longer interested :P

Well, back on track, if OP even cares anymore and as other people have said there's really no point in leaving it on overnight unless you're doing something that needs it to stay on. It's not necessarily bad, but it is somewhat wasteful.

You do know that components have a MTBF, so the longer its runing, the more of that time's a wastin. XD

TBH, it doesn't really matter, but IMHO, if you're not using it, turn it off.

Honestly, i usually leave it on 24/7, bar the occasional restart and if i'm leaving the house and i dunno if i'll be back in a certain time, i usually run a shutdown script running for 5hours ish

should i keep my computer on all the time or is it better to turn it off overnight when I'm not using it?

If you got hardware that can withstand 24/7 usage and you dont care about how much electricity it uses then just leave it on... If I was to leave it on i'd make sure it stays under 50watts(with haswell it could go down as low as 10watts system usage)
