CD VS MP3

spwath

Is a CD the same quality as an MP3, or better?

Would it be worth it to re rip my music library into a higher quality format than MP3?

Mp3 is much higher quality

it would be better to find that audio file online with a higher bitrate.

Assuming the file was originally created as CDDA(aka Redbook), that format would be favorable over MP3. From a technical aspect, WAV or FLAC would be the most ideal format solution.

IMO the best analogy I've come up to date is audio compression is like jpeg compression (especially on the 128kbps side). You see a normal jpg image and it looks totally fine, until you look at the finer details. Text looks all fuzzy. Same with cymbals for rock. Noisy sounds in mp3 compression sound very...compressed. So imo, all you have to do is up the bitrate until you can no longer hear any compression or loss of quality and you're good.

WTF?!?!

CDs are basically raw WAV data.  MP3s are compressed.  Compression, especially lossy compression like MP3, is not as good as raw.  FLAC is lossLESS compression and will make bit perfect copies of anything, including CDs, that you encode with it.

Forget all about mp3s unless you are stuck with a music player that can't handle anything else.  Buy CDs and rip to FLAC and/or buy HD recordings online.  Storage space is CHEAP!   :D

I mean unless you have a car without a cassette player and only a cd player with no aux input....

What benefit does a CD give you?

AND The fact that he would be ripping them anyway.

Well it's always good to have the uncompressed digital copy of your music, even if there are no audible differences

I keep FLAC on my PC and converted it into MP3 for my phone

It's lossless 1.4mpbs quality, comes with booklet and cover art, lasts a long time. Some music can't be obtained in any other way, especially at high quality.

You guess nothing. CDs are still worth getting for those who deem them as such.

To everyone else in this thread who didn't know that CDs are uncompressed audio, for shame.

OK thanks.

Now what should I use to rip them? Any specific program? Would vcl (or is it vlc? the little traffic cone thing) work?

Exact audio copy if you're some kind of freak, otherwise most media players will work, VLC will work as well.

If this was there was a subgroup for porn enthusiasts, I'd say CD. Its easier to stash CD's than configure some private setup on PC's so that nobody sees your porn collection. Yeah, you can stash the CD's INSIDE the PC case (depends ALOT on physical internal space... whatever), in your closet, laundry, a briefcase with combination locks or padlocks, etc..., under a mattress, envelop, etc... plus, if you had your CD personally signed by your favorite porn star/s, thats a big win.

Then again, we're talking about audio... much depends, really. I like CD's because, like what @SSL said:

The other thing that has been overlooked is that CDs can be purchased USED.  Try and buy an entire album from iTunes, Amazon, or HDtracks for $1   :P

And by ripping them (and then putting the CDs in safe storage) you actually have another back up.  Yeah, it would be a pain in the butt to re-rip every single one of my CD collection (500+) BUT I could do it if I had to!

I use the ripper in Foobar 2000.  Most other non-iTunes music apps have a FLAC capable ripper as well.  Some of the paid ones will even go out and find the cover art and automatically download it for you while it's being ripped.

Fairstars CD Ripper is also very good.  It's fast, does FLAC, id3 tags, and it's free:  http://www.fairstars.com/cd_ripper/

I just ripped it in Foobar, but it has no album info, artist, or track names.

Ideas?

Foobar is very nice but takes a bit to get setup properly.   There is even a script you can install for it that will locate missing album art.  This video will take less time for you to watch than it would me typing (and you reading) the same thing :)

That didn't work. When I pressed lookup, it said
