Black Audio Output on PC Won't Put Out Sound

Dear readers,

I have recently bought a prebuilt Dell XPS 8500 ( I know building my own PC is cheaper). I have only been able to listen to music through the loud speaker output on the top of the PC and I find that the quality isn't as good as I hoped it would be, so I did some research and found out I had realtek preinstalled on my PC. It installed fine, but the sound output is only through the black output box on the back, but I can't hear anything when I plug in my headphones.

thank you,
