Can I put my SIM in a different phone?

So right now I have a MetroPCS Galaxy Avant, and I was wondering if I were to get a T-Mobile Galaxy SIII and put my SIM in, would it work? I mean, Metro uses the T-Mobile network and all...

Should work just fine, sim cards are not phone locked (while phones can be locked)

Shouldn't even matter what network they use.

I don't really know much about the workings of american phones, but when I moved from my nexus 4 to a oneplus one everything worked fine. It was a pay as you go sim so I don't really know if that's a thing in america, I assume it is, should work regardless.

SIM cards don't care. As long as the phone is unlocked.

It should work.  Depending on your carrier, there might be a number you have to call a specific number in order for it to take effect (most likely for documentation purposes), but other than that there shouldn't be any problems.

It doesn't have to be unlocked. T-Mobile locked phones will work with MetroPCS, and vice versa.

A locked phone can only connect to a specific carrier's network (a phone locked under verizon cant connect to tmobile and stuff)

But that does mean a Sprint locked phone can use for example Ting sim cards (because I think it's the same network)
