How long do you guys think 3GB VRAM will be sufficient for gaming?

Hello,

 

The question is exactly what the title states: How long do you guys think 3GB VRAM will be sufficient for gaming?

 

I am just curious. I really don't know too much, but from what I have read the cards with higher VRAM are for higher resolution gaming and textures. Is that true?

At 1080p it will be fine for quite a few years, though at higher resolutions you'd be best off with 4GB+

Depends on the game, filters and resolution, 3GB is not enough anymore in many cases.

At 1080p it should be no problem, unless  you're trying to max everything out.

At 1440p my rig is thirsty for more than 3GB VRAM so yeah it's on its way out unless you're staying low res.

Everyone saying 3gb is fine (and will be for years) for 1080p hasn't played any AAA open world game from the past year and a half.

It depends on the resolution and how long you want to push your hardware.. 

 

If you want to keep your GPU for the next 5 years, you can do that. You'll have to make some major sacrifices with graphics options, resolution, and framerate towards the end of it's life, but there's nothing stopping you from playing modern games on older (but still fairly recent) hardware.

i7 not perfectly stable at 4.4.. #firstworldproblems

4k not 1080p.

He didn't say 1080p, anyway, GTA V uses more than that on 1080p.

For 1920x1080? I bet it'll be fine for at least another year. By next year? DirectX 12 should be out and hopefully Vulkan API as well which means if all goes according to plan? VRAM should double in Multi-GPU configurations instead of mirror so you could always pick up a second GPU and have properly scaling performance without VRAM bottlenecks in the next two years.

Of course, that's as long as all goes according to plan. 2GB VRAM isn't enough anymore for some multi-GPU systems like mine... GTX 680 2GB two-way SLI? I run out of VRAM on GTA V before I can crank up my graphics further while maintaining an average of 60fps with 1920x1080 resolution.

I think @RuLeZ is referring to 3840x2160 or 2560x1440 resolution and such... 3GB VRAM on 3840x2160 is definitely not enough and I bet on 2560x1440 some games feel the squeeze just like 2GB VRAM on 1920x1080 is.

Without filters the resolution doesnt increase so much the usage of VRAM.

Sorry I didn't post resolution. I game at 1080p and will be for a while. I just got a 980 Ti from a 780. I was surprised that the 980 Ti really cannot max everything at 1080p, like GTA V, Unity and Total War games (Attila is what I tried). And who says a 980 Ti is overkill for 1080p lol? I am torn on whether or not to return the 980 Ti. Anyhow, it got me wondering about VRAM.

Not sure about you but I am perfectly fine with 3 GB of VRAM at 1080p. I barely go above 2 GB usage in most games (Witcher 3, Homeworld and etc.)

At The Moment its really hard to break 3GB on 1080p, must be a bad coded game or playing with a ton of mods..
