It depends what you are wanting to do with it.

An AMD cpu has no place in a solely gaming build, end of.

I3 4150, Intel HD graphics, corsair CX750M, 4gb ram, Asus H81M-E, corsair 230T, Intel stock cooler WD Green 2TB Gigabyte 550TI

Why you shouldn't trust Gpu or Cpu boss Click on this I dare you!

4790k is just a 4770k running at a higher clock speed with a better thermal interface

I have an i5 and many other things

Don't get the i7 5820k for gaming, heck even the i7 4690K is overkill for gaming. Get the i5 4690k and get a better graphic card instead.

people post these kind of threads asking what cpu to go for but don't explain what they're gonna be doing annoys me the most.

I7-4790k - Mainly gaming and better for games that utilize 4 cores (which are a lot of games) with slight rendering capabilities

I7-5820k - Still fast in gaming especially when overclocked with better rendering capabilities

If you're only looking to play games without any thoughts of rendering I would go for the I5-4690k

X99 (5820k) is the enthusiast platform, you pay more money for little to no performance gain,

I'd wait skylake is almost here, but if you wanna buy now and it just really for gaming go for an i5 4690 or i7 4790 (or the K version if you are planning to overclocking)

For gaming the i7-4790k is the best because fewer cores means you are likely to be able to overclock more and I don't think there are any games that benefit drastically from 6 cores yet. Skylake is just around the corner, so if you are in no rush you can always wait for more info, but I wouldn't recommend waiting just because you think it'll be so much better. I considered waiting to build last summer until broadwell launched (Z97 boards were out so I figured it'd be within a few months, and well you know the story) and I am super glad I didn't. I am content with the investment considering my CPU is still the high end consumer i7 a year later. So depends on your timeframe and budget situation. If you only plan to game today I wouldn't get the 5820k unless you are a huge enthusiast and who doesn't mind paying an extra $150+ for something you'll likely never notice.

CPU:  Intel i7-4790K      Cooler:  Noctua NH-D14     GPU: ZOTAC GTX 1070 TI MINI     Motherboard:  ASUS Z97 Gryphon     RAM:  32GB G Skill Trident X

Storage: 2x 512GB Samsung 850 EVO (RAID 0) / 2TB Seagate Barracuda     PSU: 850W EVGA SuperNova G2     Case: Fractal Design Node 804

Go with either I5-4690k or I7-4790k then, or wait for Skylake chipsets to come out

Not... really...

See, the extra 4 threads won't improve gaming obviously, but for a renderer or someone who uses a lot of cores would LOVE the extra 4 threads.

OP was asking about gaming, i my self use a 5820 for VM's and rendering. So in the sense the OP was asking you pay alot more money for little performance gain

Gaming and photo editing. I believe photo editing likes CPU threads.
