Is a GTX 980 Ti too overkill for an i5 4690k?

Go to solution Solved by blackmalicious,

Hey guys! I'm considering buying a GTX 980 Ti, but I'm worried it would be too overkill for an i5 4690k. So I kind of want to sell my GTX 970 and get a 980 Ti, but would that be so powerful that I should also upgrade my CPU? I'm just worried that I won't get it's full potential because my CPU is too weak to keep up with a game that requires a 980 Ti or Titan X. So if I do get a 980 Ti, should I upgrade my 3.5 GHz CPU to like an 4.0 GHz i7 quad-core or something? Thanks! -Jordan :)

ALSO... What are your opinions on the EVGA 980 Ti, the water-cooled Hybrid? I think it has a lot of overclocking potential because it runs at only 50 degrees Celsius, but maybe you have a different opinion...?

P.S. My cat died today

Yeah i have gtx 980 ti so your safe

Ps:Lol we have the same location

(Sorry about your cat)...Stay Awesome

What do you mean overkill like will it bottleneck your gpu? In that case I highly doubt it.

You know you can OC the 4690k right?
But it won't be a bottleneck in games.

For media production you should look into other stronger processors, but for gaming it's a really good processor.

No don't worry the i5 is great with the 980Ti for gaming, lots of people including me have that combo, and a lot of people recommend it instead of the i7 if people are just doing gaming on their machine.

The i5 will only be a bottle neck to 3 980Ti's or 3 Titan X's lol

And the hybrid is great for an AIO watercooled alternative, 50 degrees is pretty nice, most of the non reference air cooled still keep it low though in the 80's max for 100% load, which isn't bad.

And sorry about the cat!

The 4690K will handle the 980 Ti just fine. However, in games that are more CPU bound like Skyrim, Starcraft, etc will give you a higher boost in performance if you increase CPU performance in some way - either an explicit upgrade or simply overclocking.

PcPer just did a detail comparison, that for most games, a non overclockable i5 4440 is just as good as a i7 4790K.

Nah, I plan on upgrading my 780s to a single 980 ti to go with my 4690k.
