GTX 970 vs GTX 980 vs Radeon R9 390

Go to solution Solved by Blackwash,

I am mean in higher resolution display.

On 1080p what card would be preferred?

Like most of us on your thread, I'd go with the R9 390 - quite the bargain at it's price.

I am not sure what graphics card should pick.

My brother and I are discussing my build (see http://de.pcpartpicker.com/p/zp6HTW) and we are doubting between the following cards.

MSI Radeon R9 390 8GB Video Card

  • Radeon R9 390
  • GTX 970
  • GTX 980

The setup will be a 1080p monitor with a 60 Hz screen but a larger screen will be possible in the future (talk 0.5 - 1 year).

What would be your choice?

I am tempted to the GTX 980. It is a solid card with overclocking potential and maybe a bit overkill on the setup at this moment. But as time goes on I think this card can fit my system better and better.

My brother is towards the 970 or the R9 390.

By larger screen, do you mean physical size in inches, or a higher resolution display?

GTX 970 is fine for up to 1080p.

R9 390 has a wider memory bus and 8 GB of VRAM, which are a major plus for resolutions above 1080p.

GTX 980 is truly a tad overkill for what you are looking for, as well as the R9 390.

From what I've seen, the R9 390 and GTX 980 are necking each other out, with the AMD side quite often beating team Green at higher resolutions.

I'd go for the R9 390. It performs better than the 970 and is better value than the 980. Plenty for 1080p.
