The 690 could perform slightly better, but the 970 has double (ok, 1.75x) the usable vRAM, which makes it better overall. The 970 also uses half the power, which saves money in the long term.

Well, it depends what you'll be using the card for or what demands you have. For the best performance and price, I would go with the 970.

This would be the 970 I would recommend:

I didn't say it was the best if you look back at what I said, I said I would recommend it because it is one of my favorite cards. I know someone with a Gigabyte 970 that really doesn't like it and wishes he got an EVGA instead. It doesn't have the best cooling, but it has a slightly faster core clock compared to the Gigabyte. I've had 2 EVGA GPUs, and I would recommend them to anyone. I've never had any problems.

Ever think that he may not want to overclock? He may want to keep the GPU at factory settings and not alter it in any manner. In that case, the EVGA core clock would still be faster than the Gigabyte like I said. Can you not read? I never said the EVGA GPU was better than the Gigabyte nor did I said it had a better cooler. I said it is a reliable card, and I have had experience with it so I am able to recommend it. End of story, thanks.

yeh its sort of like XFX vs Sapphire for AMD cards.

Sapphire is faster, better cooled. But XFX has that sweet lifetime warranty to their cards and perform pretty darn well.
