USB Dac + Headphone amplifier

Go to solution Solved by Dredgy,

Audioengine D1.

Is fantastic for the price, and can take RCA and 3.5mm so you can run speakers and headphones off of it.

Why don't you want the Fiio E10K if you are looking for USB ? It's probably the best bang for the buck when speaking about USB DAC/AMP in the ~80$ area. I am not sure if the price difference between the Fiio and the D1 is justified by a better audio quality. Unless you need speakers out.

Personnally, any USB DAC over the Fiio E10K would be an ODAC. I would save my money and get an ODAC/O2 or ODAC/SMSL headphone amp.

Why do you want a dac?

Do you need one?

Don't get a D1 for a pair of headphones, for the love of god. Output impedance is 10 ohms...

Well my purchase had nothing to do with "needing" an amp. I needed somewhere to plug in my headphones and allow independent volume control, as my speakers plug directly into my motherboard, and I like to use either both speakers and headphones at once, or switch between both (and HDMI audio devices) rapidly for monitoring purposes, without having to plug and unplug things in. Then I use the RCA for my Sennheiser RS220. There is more than one use case for the thing.

And the OP didn't say what impedance headphones he was using, so he might very well have high impedance monitors.

How about a goddamn SMSL SD793-II. Excellent if you have optical-out available on your mo bo.

But the D1 is more expensive so it has to be better!
