No... Actually Sandy Bridge ( And some others ) Aren't sodered you can upgrade your cpu , just make sure the temps you are getting now are under 50 Degrees C under load and you should be fine

Sorry, but laptop cpu's are soldered to the motherboard.

Thats not always true.

You will have to check online and see if its a LGA or a BGA.

I would be surprised if Asus solder there chips in but at the same time as its a I3 they may have gone done the budget route BGA is cheaper for them.

Ok guys didn't know in my experience they are usually soldered. Where would you buy new mobile cpu's anyways?

i can only open up 1 spot and its for the ssd ram, dont know how to open the rest

To get to the CPU you have to take it all apart.

Some laptop CPUs are soldered, some are not.  You need to check at ark.intel.com/#mobile

In this case there are two variants of the i3-2310M, one with a BGA socket (soldered) and one with PGA, which is removable.  It could be either one, so you will need to check inside.

Assuming the CPU is not soldered, it uses socket PPGA988, so you should be able to swap it for an i7-2640M if you want.  Quad cores use a different socket and the laptops cooling system would probably not be able to handle one of those anyway.

They shouldn't be (though there are BGA versions), we did the same with a Toshiba from some crappy Celeron B815 to the Core i3-2310M, they should be socket rPGA988.

@OP - You should be able to but the mobile Core i7's are 45w TDP I think, I can say that your laptop won't handle the heat also if you're unlucky and it is BGA1023 or something then you won't be able to because they are indeed soldered directly to the board.

EDIT: To be honest mate I wouldn't bother, that Core i3-2310M is a very good CPU, I'd just stick with it or if you can get one cheap then a Core i5-2410M which is the same CPU (pretty much) but with turbo boost.

Some are soldered, some are not, simple as that :)

There are 35W mobile i7 CPUs, he just can't get a quad-core which are all 45W.  They use their own socket anyway though.

Really thought they shared the same socket, ohh well you learn something new everyday :P

Why would you choose a Core i7 and not have a quad core :P

If you have the PGA socket then you'll be good but look mate, I'd stick with that Core i3-2310M but here are the list of CPU's compatible with the HM65 chipset, click on 'Compatible Products' on the left if you want to have a look but the CPU you currently have is bloody good, I'd stick with it.

1. check if cpu is upgradable (rPGA)

2.how powerful is ur psu ? some companies offer two versions  for high end and low end components

3.is the cooling any good ? sometimes only dual core models are available for select models

I would go into Speccy, under 'CPU' it should say whether it's BGA or rPGA, should come under 'Package' like on my laptop I have a Core 2 Duo T8100 and it comes under Socket P (478).

Then so long as your chipset is compatible and you can upgrade it but preferably stick within the same TDP as the original chip, the cooling system I doubt won't take much more and I certainly wouldn't risk it.
