The time has come for my old dual core chip to be upgraded. Sadly, most of the games I play stutter really bad in this chip (GTA V, Project CARS, and Mortal Kombat X). So I am looking for a better chip to replace my old platform. I am looking at an i3-4170 (~$90 in my place) and an i5-4690k(~$200). Is the i5's performance worth the $110 difference? (Do not suggest AMD) I see a 10fps increase in some benchmarks but that means I'm paying $11 for an FPS increase. Is it worth it? or should I just buy a new i3?

i5 is worth it if you have a decent graphics card. but if you don't then i3+decent graphics is better. All of it depends.

If you get the I5 then you wont need to upgrade your cpu for a long time an I3 will need upgrading sooner.

An AMD cpu has no place in a solely gaming build, end of.

I have an EVGA FTW 750Ti. Should I buy an i5 instead?

Will you be upgrading that? Because i3 can handle that gpu just fine, if you plan to upgrade it past 960/r9 380 then I would recommend the i5.

I currently have a GTX 750Ti

An i3 would work fine, it's likely you won't see a difference b/t an i5 and i3 with that GPU. Get an i5 if you plan to upgrade to a significantly more powerful card.

Just a fyi there are locked i5s which perform similarly to the 4690k for ~$170 such as the i5 4460.

why? I don't see a vast improvement against the i3 in terms of frames

If u ever upgrade that GPU you will enjoy having the i5

What about a used i5? Like a 4670k

Yeah I see but there isn't really a significant difference in terms of price from where I come from. (Ph)

4670k's were not released here in the Ph. Only 4460, 4570, and 4690k's.

I see. Well if considering an unlocked i5, do you have a decent Z97 motherboard and aftermarket cooler? Even if the difference is small in price, buying an unlocked i5 for a little bit more would still be waste of money.

Heyyo,

You would benefit more from an upgraded GPU than an upgraded CPU tbh. GTX 750 ti, I'd swap that out for an AMD R9 270. It would be a more cost efficient upgrade tbh. AMD R9 270 GPUs are very nicely priced and handle 1920x1080 gaming quite nicely. :)

After you upgrade that GPU? Then I'd consider getting an i3 or i5.

Why would he do that when he can't achieve a consistent frame rate to start with?

I have a b85m motherboard that overclocked my g3258 decently. I also have a hyper 212x evo if that helps. I reached 4.7gHz on my g3258 with average temps of 55 deg.

Like I said, I'm not interested in AMD's products. Also, my 750Ti can play my games at high frames @ 1080p or even maybe in 1440p at decent settings. There's no point in upgrading my GPU if my current CPU is bottlenecking my games.

Well that motherboard should work great for overclocking a G3258, but you could do the same even with H81 motherboards. You really need a good Z97 motherboard to overclock a 4690k.

Oh so my b85m won't overclock a 4690k? That's bad. So should I consider getting a 4570 for around $150 instead?

Heyyo,

Why would he do that when he can't achieve a consistent frame rate to start with?

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/pentium-g3258-overclocking-performance,3849-5.html

and

http://www.anandtech.com/show/9217/the-amd-a8-7650k-apu-review-also-new-testing-methodology/8

I'm failing to see a massive performance boost jumping up CPUs tbh... unless there's something I'm missing???

Intel Pentium G3258 has the same CPU power of an AMD APU. That says a lot for a dual core chip. People seriously underestimate the performance of the G3258 tbh...

Now let's compare a GTX 750 ti to an AMD R9 270:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gtx-750-ti-review,3750-9.html

In Battlefield 4 I'm seeing a potential for almost double the framerate and almost 60fps with 1920x1080 with Ultra settings and x2 MSAA.

So yeah... I'd definitely recommend GPU upgrade over CPU for a most cost-effective upgrade. That GTX 750 ti was built for home theatre PC's and upgrading older computers with recent hardware, it wasn't really built for high end graphics gaming in mind.

Like I said, I'm not interested in AMD's products. Also, my 750Ti can play my games at high frames @ 1080p or even maybe in 1440p at decent settings. There's no point in upgrading my GPU if my current CPU is bottlenecking my games.

Lol alright. If ya wanna fan-boy out? That's your choice. Get an NVIDIA GTX 760 then. It performs about the same as a AMD R9 270 but will cost you a little more. I'm all about cost-effective upgrades but up to you.

Nevermind my logic, buy an i5 see if I care since I'm just trying to help. :P
