Sony A7s vs Panasonic GH4

If you were to choose between these two, what camera would you pick and why?

a7s for its amazing low light and full frame sensor. The gh4 does not perform well at all in low light situations. Though the downside to the a7s is that it cannot record 4k internally and requires an external recorder to do so. The gh4 can record 4k internally and that is one thing it has over the a7s. If you want the best image quality possible though, the a7s is going to be the better camera.

a7s, only for the low light i would already get that one, the gh4 is nice and all, but internal 4K isnt something for me, since 4K screens aren't that normal yet in the standard living room/pc set-up

May the light have your back and your ISO low.

It depends on what you shoot. Do you want slow mo? High ISO capability? Rotating screen for weird angle shots? Shallow DoF? Lots of DoF? Are you grading the footage? Dose internal 4k resolution matter? Do you want to do stills with it?

There is no "better camera" just cameras that are better suited for the job.

Im With ShadowCaptain, A7r II.

Or just the a7s.

A7rII looks really interesting although, I'm worried about the price. My budget would be 3k and maybe 4k but beyond that is a no-no for me.

I'm just worried about rolling shots and that jello effect. The 4k would be nice but if A7s  image quality is really that good, then ill get the A7s.

If you can afford the a7rII, i would go for it. Its arguably the single best do it all camera on the market right now. The fact that it is capable of having a global shutter makes it possibly a better option than what canons much more expensive cinema line even has to offer. It is certainly a better value, that is for sure.

It's priced at $3,200 right now and that's in USD :(. IDK man, it's tempting. Hahaha! I'll just wait couple months.

The A7s only records 4k to an external recorder, the cheapest being the Atomos Shogun which is $1000 and up anyway

the A7rII has built in 4k, a super 35 crop mode (no/reduced rolling shutter according to reports?) , 399 AF tracking points, higher resolution sensor, BSI sensor for better low light, 5 axis stabilisation, for better video hand held (or just for slow shutter speeds handheld),  phase detect on sensor, can focus canon/nikon lenses at basically the same speed as a canon body etc

Its possibly THE best camera on the market (there will be an A7sII maybe too at some point)

the A7s, is still a kick ass camera, but you will need to spend more to get it as functional as the A7rII

the GH4 has a lovely 4k image, but its stills are average and its low light is appallingly bad

Philip Bloom has a review of the A7s and its low light ability is amazing!  It literally sees in the dark.  It really comes down to 4k vs low light...

The A7s and GH4 are really two totally different cameras. It's the classic apples to oranges comparison. Just like others have said, the A7s produces amazing low-light footage and still has a fantastic 1080p image as well.

The GH4 has the convenience of internal 4k and as long as you've got plenty of light, looks very sharp. It depends on what your shooting situations are.
