No, there is nothing special about them. I've used non Apple HDMI cables with their products and they've worked perfect.

Are the HDMI cables at the apple store special? they are 20$ and 6 feet. The employees here tell me it only works with their devices and that it is "special". Is this true? I also found a 15 foot HDMI cable at the 99 cents store for 99 cents.. (Apparently the 99 cent store sells items that are 1.99 now.)

No just special because they hurt your wallet. Just go to Monoprice or Amazon they have cables for really good prices.

I have been using a 1 euro HDMI cable (from Duracell) on my PS3 now for 2 years. it's bullshit what they are saying

Same Bullshit as Apple Power Adapter. HDMI is a standard, USB is a standard and Apple can't change how it works.

 

If you do want to buy a Mac, I always got them at Bestbuy, they were cheaper and I could use a giftcard from Chase.

Other than those apple cables may look nicer, nope, HDMI is a standard, and not even apple can change that

The only reason to pay more for a cable that carries a digital signal is if it's being heavily used. Plugged, and unplugged many times, being tramped on, and stuff like that. It's when it's being used like that where you might want to pay a little more for cables.

 

But for 99% of the people, then whatever is the cheapest one you can get works just fine.

Also, the connector being gold doesn't matter. It's the pins that send the signal, and even then, gold on them will make very little difference, if any.
