AMD - A New Era In PC Gaming

Opcode

Yea electricity costs 6¢ a kilowatt hour so I'm just like fuck you I'm going to have dual 290X's whether you think it'd a bad idea or not.

Damn son, $0.06 a kWh? That's some excellent prices! Even for me, and I live in Ontario, where we might pay $0.10/kWh on average.

For that price, you could do quad CFX 290x's! xD

Even if it was 30 cents per kWh it'd cost you less than a tenner a year extra.

All too true. When people try to make the "argument" that the extra electricity costs are bad, they're generally calculating a worst case scenario in which a PC is running at 100% load for 24/7/365.

Which, of course, is ridiculous, and totally unrealistic. Anyone doing that is likely using a dedicated Folding rig, and probably doesn't give a shit about electricity costs to begin with, OR is trying to maximize performance/watt per meter in a rack space.

Two years ago, no one gave a shit about power consumption. Then NVIDIA started marketing about how it's such a big deal, and how AMD is suddenly so bad at it, etc.

Except that even in the case of the 290x, the consumption difference over a year equals a few $$ (single digits) for most people. Sure, if you live in a place where electricity is expensive as fuck, then okay, look at power consumption and heat output... but for the average person, it will make little difference.

But of course, because people lost their shit over the "power hungry space heater" that was the 290x, AMD was like "aiight, bruh, here you go" and blew us away with Fiji.

I'm going to disagree with you a little bit. Yeah power consumption has become more of a factor, but people were still looking at power consumption two years ago. Or three years ago for that matter:

The cheapest GeForce GTX 580 goes for about $470, while Radeon HD 7970s have crept up $10 to $560. I’d totally be willing to pay a $10 or $20 premium over the 580 for AMD’s new Radeon HD 7950, if only because of the compute potential and power consumption advantage. But I’d also want accelerated encoding to work, and I’d like to see the potential speed-up with VCE factored in.

Let’s see if AMD can get this card’s full suite of capabilities up and running before it has more compelling competition. At an anticipated price tag of $450, it's a cheaper, cooler, and more power-friendly alternative to GeForce GTX 580. In games, there's really no contest in a decision between the two.

(I love looking back at past pricing, $560 for a 7970  )

Yea electricity costs 6¢ a kilowatt hour so I'm just like fuck you I'm going to have dual 290X's whether you think it'd a bad idea or not.

And meanwhile Nvidia only cut prices on their more power-efficient GTX 980 in North America, not here in Europe where electricity prices can approach 0.40 USD per kWh. <_<

This is what it's like living in Alberta, power is so cheap it's funny.

Well, yeah, all that Oil power... :P

At least I can rest assured that all my Ontarian power is basically clean energy in the form of Nuclear from Bruce Nuclear or Pickering, or Hydro-Electric from Niagara :D:P

Of course, there's still the occasional natural gas or other fossil fuel power plant here, but the vast majority of our electricity in Ontario is either Hydro or Nuclear.

There is no mainstream clean power source besides solar and geothermal in my opinion, everything else is a battle between the better of two evils.

Well Hydro-Electric is definitely way more clean compared to Fossil Fuel. The only issue is that:

1. You're very limited in where it can be installed, and

2. Making sure there is no large ecological impact. Niagara has balanced these quite nicely.

For Nuclear, sure it's not 100% "clean", but it's damn near close. The amount of actually radioactive waste material generated is quite small, AND to top it off, they've developed next gen reactors that can use the "Waste" material from older reactors as fuel. Digging out a bunker in stable bedrock also makes an excellent place to store the radioactive remains in a safe place - mostly just tools and replacement parts from the reactor itself.

So, anybody else thinking about something like

i7 5820K

Tri-Fire a Dual FijiX with a single FijiX to utilize the PCI-E lane distribution (slot 1 x16, slot 2 x8) amongst the x16 slots (in theory it should work)

Use the four remaining PCI-E lanes for an m.2 SSD.

Solar's all well and good down south in sunny places like Canada, but it's not that great in places like Scandinavia.

PCI bandwidth is overrated in my opinion everyone didn't give a shit until nvidia can't in and said you need 8X to run SLI, they ruin everything don't they.

ehh Canada isn't much more sunny compared to Scandinavia - I guess it depends on which part of Canada... We're kind of HUGE, and go right up into the arctic circle (The North Pole is technically Canadian territory, after all - Well it was in 2001, but Magnetic Pole Drift has caused it to drift out into international waters).

Southern BC or Ontario can be quite sunny in the height of Summer, but even in southern Canada, Solar Power is less than ideal. Hydro, Wind, and Nuclear are much more reliable sources for constant, year round production.

With hydro go watch a documentary called Damnation and you will realize why it should almost never be used. Niagra might be the only place where it's a good choice.

Where do we keep nucular waste currently because the storage solutions we use now won't last long enough for it to decay at all, also with a major meltdown happening every 50 years and making large areas of land uninhabitable and exposing millions to varying levels of radiation it's not that clean. Yea next gen reslactors will be clean but they are not developed into something reliable and working and being hooked up to a grid currently.

That's quite a clever way to cool the VRM, if I'm honest. No exposed moving parts on the GPU to get clogged up with dust, you just need to clean the rad every now and again

Ah true - Yes as I said, there can be major ecological impacts with Hydro - Niagara is a pretty unique situation - but it's HUGE AS FUCK, and powers about 4.4 GigaWatts of power today.

Nuclear is currently stored at six different sites across Canada. Mostly on-site at the power generation station for short term, before being moved to a dry storage facility - mostly in Ontario.

Canada is currently planning to create a new long term storage facility near the Bruce Nuclear station, 1.2 KM underground in solid bedrock, that can house radioactive material indefinitely, far away from water sources. It IS near lake Huron, which is freaking some people out, but frankly, the deepest part of Lake Huron is only 229 meters deep, and this new facility is planned to be around six times deeper then the deepest part, and it's over a KM away anyway. There's literally no ecological risk to the watershed.

Yeah... still better than in Scandinavia, at least the parts of Canada where people live.

My current rig is running a i7-5820k with and asus mobo deluxe. I was waiting for AMD to release their new video card. i have 2k to upgrade, since the fury-x comes with a decent AIO, I dont have to order a water block. I was thinking Intel 750 nvme, Benq BenQ XL2730Z, Fury-x.

I really want to get 2 fury-x cards, but since 16nm to 14nm finfet is right around corner, also with more Hbm. it does not make since to put so much money in the last 28nm gpu of it's generation
