I like efficiency. Not so much for the savings in energy (which, in the long run, isn't that massive anyway), but more to do with the heat that any given component radiates out. Saving money doesn't hurt, either.

This is the reason I chose the GTX 970 over the R9 290X.

Anyone else the same? Or do you prefer brute strength at the expense of efficiency?

4670K and a 970 -> 960. Efficiency > brute force. I really don't like noisy computers.

Also, it maybe not hurt your wallet much, but if millions of people were to focus more on getting efficient parts it would certainly help reduce power consumption.

Depends,

As long it's well cooled it's fine.

Also, if the difference is 100w, and you use your pc for 2hrs a day at those 100 extra watts, and you pay 0,20€/kWh then over a year it's 14,5€ difference.

Recommend what is best, not what you preffer.

So what's the difference in power usage between, say, an R9 290X and a GTX 970?

It's like $7 over the course of a year. I'd rather get the better bang for the buck upfront. If you really want to go there, then the Titan X is more efficient than the GTX 970. Are you telling me it makes sense to buy one?

Wow.

So what's the difference in power usage between, say, an R9 290X and a GTX 970?

Normal 970 : 170W

Normal R9 290x : about 280w ( my R9 290 is 220-260 according to GPU Z )

So the difference for me would be ~15€ a year IF  I use it 2 hours a day every day .

I tend to use mine for more than 2 hours.

This is, of course, making the assumption that the graphics card is being run at full tilt for the duration of your time using the PC, which isn't likely the case. So again, the "save money in the long run" becomes pointless given the premium of buying NVidia.

the 970 is faster and more efficient and 100€ cheaper here than the r9 290x

Same price, better perf and 4GB vram

More power consumption and a bit more noise.

And those are bad 970's vs good 290x's
