The Xtra Elite, touts SD 4.0 and UHS compliance, with data transfer rates of up to 300 Mb/s.

Microdia hints it will be around the $1,000 mark

Wonder if it's as reliable as other SD cards. They're so terrible...

After 2 years Sandisk still can't make a 32GB card last more than 6 months in somethins as simple as an eReader. Then again the 512GB card isn't being made by them so it should be fine.

Amazing how phone manufacturers still wanna make me believe an additional 32gb of memory is worth 100 to 200 extra bucks when we can theoretically fit a tera no problem.

Actually that's a rather interesting point: we've been making flash memory ever so more efficient and smaller but if we make it just a hair more reliable we can replace mechanical drives with it: you have your high speed SSD drives and your slower speed, storage flash drives 3 or 4 tb in the space of an m.2 stick.

Flash storage may be slower than an SSD, but it still beats a HDD in speed.

Flash storage may be slower than an SSD, but it still beats a HDD in speed.

That highly depends on which eMMC/microSD and HDD you are talking about.

If you're talking high end eMMC and microSD then yeah, they can be pretty similar to an HDD and better in some areas (like small random read/writes) but they are awful in terms of sequential writes.

For example the HTC M8's storage is better than my HDD in most areas (especially random 4KB reads) but my HDD is like 6 times as fast as sequential writes (~20MBps vs ~120MBps).

eMMC is a lot faster than microSD as well, so chances are your HDD probably outperforms your microSD card by a lot.

Have you tried actually putting 128GB of things on it? A lot of times these cheap cards and memory sticks are just low capacity models with modified partition tables to trick your OS into thinking they are bigger than they really are. If you got for example an 8GB card that's sold as 128GB, then when you go above 8GB of data your files will become corrupt, so you should check it out before putting anything important on it.

512GB of data, more than twice sandisk's 200GB shown like 6 months ago, in something the size of the nail on your little finger? This isnt going to spontaneously collapse into a black hole is it?

You know what's easier than buying and building a brand new PC? Petty larceny!
If you're worried about getting caught, here's a trick: Only steal one part at a time. Plenty of people will call the cops because somebody stole their computer -- nobody calls the cops because they're "pretty sure the dirty-bathrobe guy from next door jacked my heat sink."

Why is pricing so high for flash storage??

That much storage in a tiny space is expensive.

Its also why high quality flash is expensive. CF cards laugh at all the people saying "OMG this is expensive". Please, Paying 500 for a card was a norm for people who absolutely needed the most reliable flash memory for their gear. At least CF is cheap enough now but we're not getting close to the $ per GB that platter drives are at.

Hopefully soon. I like using 128GB CF cards for another layer of archiving my photos, apart from the NAS backups and REDs that get thrown in a safe.

$30 for something that is normally $80?

Ebay Link... I dunno if its common with SD cards but I'm always skeptical with flash storage from Ebay. Too many people selling "128GB flash drives!" that are actually 8GB ones with the firmware hacked.
