GTX 980TI Pricing

After the 980ti is released I see no reason to purchase a Titan X if you are just gaming.

 

I plan on changing out my 780's for 2 980ti's

How much better will one 980 ti be compared to two 780 ti's in SLI?

At that price, I would buy a Titan x. $200 more for double the vram for high resolution gaming and mods seems like the better buy.

It seems to me that 12 gb is massive overkill for any gaming, there's only like two games at 4k that approach 4 gb at 4k, nevermind 6, nevermind 12.

By the time 12GB of Vram is necessary for single display 4K gaming, the TitanX will be incredibly under-powered. Sad but true.

The 390x is rumored to be around the same price and they're supposed to be the cheaper alternative, so it's not like there is a better option for cheaper. You can always still buy a 970 for cheap and pwn 1080p. These top of the line cards are for GPU snobs like me that always have to own the best and won't settle for anything less. Hey that rhymes =)

970 doesn't pwn most new games maxed at 1080p anymore. It never really did in fact. Some games even at 1080p with ALL the bells 'n' whistles on, still very tough to run. Witcher 3 for example dips below 40(low 30's) frequently on my system, hovers around 50's.

    If you are dead stuck with 0 more bucks to spend, then the obvious answer is no. But if you actually have a job, and it would actually just take a week or 2 to get that money, then I think its worth the extra 200. Funny thing is, before I ever even heard a pricing rumor of the 980ti, I was guessing the 980ti was going to be $800

Assuming you have the EVBot and watercooling probably. I'm over the whole Classified card garbage. Had a 780 Classified and thing wouldn't overclock very good at all unless running insane voltages with a flashed BIOS. Stock or LN2 BIOS doesn't make the card overclock any better. It's basically a more expensive version of the same card that basically overclocks the same.

Well I know for a fact 6GBs of vram is possible. Shadow of Mordor with HD Texture pack uses 6Gbs of VRAM and I get 69.8fps at 4k and  6.7Gbs of Vram at 5k and I get 42.9fps. That is with stock sli Titan X. I can check other games to see how much vram they use.

Word. I still have no issue with mine at all, love it. But if I can get a reasonable amount for it when non reference 980ti cooler models are available, I'm jumping at it.

If stock is only $200 less than a titan X then you may aswell just get a titan... Once 3rd party designs come into play the price difference between the titan x and the custom cooler 980ti's will be really small. Plus with nvidia allowing custom coolers on the titan x then its probably worth an extra $100 or so for a 12gb card. If you overclock it a little bit then you should be sweet for a while.

 

I will still be waiting for the benchmarks of the 980ti vs titan x to make my final decision.

I have two 980 classifieds and 100% agree with this.  They are NOT worth the extra money at all.  Go with a good non-reference model and call it a day.  I'll never buy one again.  The lightning series is way better than the classified series.  My 680's and 290x lightnings were boss compared to my junk 980's.

These recent prices are starting to turn me off computer gaming. Its just not worth the money. I say get yourself a 1080p monitor and a GPU that will handle it and use the hundreds, even thousands of dollars you save on other pursuits. This is getting to be highway robbery. Its getting so bad Im starting to think console gaming doesn't look so bad anymore.  

 

Its only going to get worse now that Nvidia has a near monopoly. I think Nvidia has pushed it too far. By the time Pascal comes out all the PC gamers will be too poor to buy it after blowing shitloads of money on these 28nm GPUs that offer only incremental improvements over previous generations. I say skip it and wait for substantial improvements in GPU performance before shelling out this kind of money. Both the Titan X and 980 ti are total rip offs. The 780 Ti debuted at what, 650, and that even seemed over priced at the time, now they want 800 and up for a 980 ti.

I agree man I felt ripped off with the Classified card. The fact it's clocked the same as a reference card pretty much and there's absolutely no head room without a BIOS flash is just false advertisement. It literally doesn't do anything better than a reference card except maybe under LN2 which I doubt most people use lol.

So is it safe to say that getting the reference card is the best way to go? How are your temps vs the reference and non reference?

Not exactly reference but something with a good cooler on it. I use a Titan X Hydro so can't comment on temps too much but I hit around 42c on mine lol. Titan X is a toasty card compared to the 780 Classy under water.

For 4k I don't think the 980Ti will cut it. 6GB may seem like enough but I've seen more then that at 1440p with the Titan X. Seen 6GB in Far Cry 4 and a whopping 8GB on Shadow of Mordor. Just imagine games next year and you'll see my point. People can say 12GB is a waste all they want but I'd rather have too much then not enough. I'm so sick of buying a card and then be VRAM bottlenecked less then a year later.

My vote is the Titan X and then add a second later when they are dirt cheap.

I still think 780 tis are the best cards on the market right now. I won't be upgrading for a while.

If it turns out to be a slightly cutdown Titan X like it seems, then yeah IMO it'd be worth it.

You could overclock it a bit and have a Titan X for like $250 less.

 

I plan on selling my 780 TI Classified and buying a 980 TI Classified when EVGA makes one.

Overclocking it won't result in a Titan X. In any way, the Titan X will remain better.

1. You can still overclock the Titan X.

2. There's a lot of stuff diabled on the 980 Ti that prevents it from ever being as fast as the Titan X.

 

Anyway, the Titan X for a couple hundred more (as you're already spending around $800) would be a better buy, as you'll get a f*cking Titan X and 12GB of VRAM for high resolution gaming.
