So I'm buying a 5820k soon for my build, and I live near a Fry's electronics, on their website it says any CPU's bought in store can be returned for a refund within 30 days for a full refund as long as it's not damaged and I have the original packaging and receipt.

I plan on binning them, and returning until I get a good one.   (I am very serious about overclocking, and an extra 100 mhz means a lot to me, for competitions on HWBOT.org)

My plan is to rotate buying and returning with a family member, but I assume they will catch on after awhile.

Would they catch on, and how long do you think it'd take for them to catch on?

If I told them I wanted to bin the CPU ahead of time, do you think they'd be understanding?   (The PC part seller people in the PC department would probably know what I was talking about if I explained it, but I'm unsure how they'd handle that)

Probably, if they store your credit card for every purchase and return.

I think it really depends on the person there who you ask to bin... Which makes me wonder some of those CPUs could already be opened and they're just reusing them... I've had some issues with frys with something that is new, but there's a disc in the op drive.

I would only do it if you have a different person buying it every time, otherwise they will notice it fast.

Check the policy.

They might be limits on the amount of time you can do it.

Could also be something more simple like "Refund takes 5 days". At which point this would get very slow.

I wonder what the odds are of you buying the same identical cpu that you've already returned multiple times?

They would catch on that something was going on pretty quick, provided the same person sees you returning a very expensive product multiple times. Unless someone there is knowledgeable with overclocking, I doubt they'd think you're binning them, probably more that it's some kind of scam. When you return it, they'll likely ask why you're retuning it, so you may just have to tell them.

Or, you could try this.

why not buy like 10, then the 9 you done like? or as many you can buy.

Don't have $3,500 to blow all at once, only have enough for one.

Probably pretty likely. I'd imagine they're not on the shop floor, so the returned ones would be put at the front/top of the pile when they're put back into stock.

Just write down the batch number or serial number... Done!

Wow.  So much for integrity.   That's a sure-fire way of labeling oneself a scumbag.

It's people like the OP that raise the cost of consumer goods.  In spite of what you believe or think, returning something is not without cost to the retailer and manufacturer.

It's their policy, if I'm not satisfied with the CPU, I can return it.

It's not like it costs them $350 to buy the CPU from intel anyways, they're still making a killing on them.

At worst, they'll probably return it, then say you can't do it again. It's not like they'll take legal action or anything against you.

I'd go for it, but it's up to you if you tell them what you're doing or not.

99% Chances that they have the same manufacturing slot processors stocked up thus resulting in the same oc capability.

There is variance in every batch, one batch number doesn't mean every chip is going to be good or bad.

Dude, don't do this crap, this is why when I go to Fry's and sometimes all I find is previously returned items. Also a lot of retailers are cracking down on habitual returners (renting) and are implementing policies that make it more of a hassle for us regular people that need to make a return. You want to go through all that to manipulate a contest on HWBOT.org, jeez.

Forgive me El Guapo. I know that I, Jefe, do not have your superior intellect and education...
