Changing out a heat sink on a hot CPU

I have been running a stress test on my CPU all morning to make sure everything is good and get some base numbers before I change my CPU cooler. MY question is do I have to wait for my CPU to cool all the way back down to room temperature before I make the swap?

yeah i would wait. But not for long. Let the PC run in idle for another 5mins and then wait 5mins after shut down.

just shut down and wait 1 minute and then start taking the necessary parts apart

Wait 2-10 minutes (depending on how long you're willing to wait) before swapping.

CPUS can pass 60 celcius under heavy load so I wouldnt get near it for a good 5-10 minutes

I don't see how it would make any difference.  Once you turn it off, by the time you get the old heatsink off it will have cooled.  A CPU is very small and does not hold a lot of heat.  It will cool very fast.  Besides, who cares if its still 60 degrees?  That is not hot enough to burn you, and it won't make any difference for the thermal paste  or mounting hardware.

Really? Restarting PC will bring temps back to idle range at 30-40C. That is still hot to touch.

1. Overclock until the magic smoke comes out. 2. Modify until broken. 3. Fix and repeat.
