The LTT Build-Off Thread! (No Building Required)

Maybe... Maybe not. ;)

There are actually many ways one could go about making such a build for both AMD and Intel. Would be interesting to see what everyone comes up with.

Z97 for everyone. Cheapest RAM, HDD, Case that will fit. Then a good quality PSU and the best GPU we can slam into it.

Done! :P

Ow woops, almost forgot the cute little pentium guy!

NZXT Phantom windowed, Asus Z77 Sabertooth, Intel 2600K, Noctua NH-D14, EVGA 780 Classified, Crucial Ballistic Tactical, Crucial M4 128GB + Samsung 850 EVO, Corsair RM850, Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty Peripherals: Sennheiser HD598, FinalMouse Classic, SteelSeries Qck Heavy, Ducky Shine Zero (MX Brown), AOC G2460PF & Qnix QX2710

There's more to it than that, though. It would not be about the best performance on the initial build, but rather the initial build would allow for the easiest/simplest upgrade path/step to the best possible performance. ;)  You would have to explain why you chose those parts and what the upgrade path/steps would be so we understand your logic.

But if this is actually going to be an upcoming build-off, let's hold off on sharing our ideas. Don't want to give away any of your ideas beforehand... :P

Well I don't see how this build isn't upgradeable enough. You grab a motherboard with 4 dimm slots for RAM. Buy either a 2x4GB or 1x8GB kit so you can upgrade to 16 or 32GB later. You buy a motherboard with at least 2 PCI-E x16 slots and tada. You can now upgrade your system as much as you want?

But I get your point, there are a few parts where I can see this becomming interesting. But the whole upgradeable part seems a little bit, weird.

I never said it wasn't upgradable enough. But there are a few other things to consider beyond what you mentioned. ;) Also there are other options and combinations from both Intel and AMD that could have similar potential. ;)

Perhaps this would be a bit too complicated to be a build-off as there are more factors involved, but on the other hand it would (hopefully) make for some interesting builds/concepts and see what kind of upgrade paths people take. Don't know what's weird about the upgradeable part. Simply explain how and why your build is easy to upgrade to a high-end beast gaming machine by replacing as few parts as necessary.

Why don't you just wait until the actual build-off? Then you can be more specific. Certain parts you select may not support certain upgrades. ;)

I appreciate your enthusiasm for this idea, but right now you're basically telling everyone what you're planning to do for your build ahead of time. :P

I have an idea for a build theme. The main premise would be to start with a low/moderate budget (say $500-600 USD) and the challenge would be to build a system that would allow for the most/best possible upgrade path to a killer gaming rig down the road - but the catch is to achieve that upgrade having to replace as few parts as possible. Those making submissions would have to (briefly) explain the upgrade path of their build and the rational behind their choice of components. Basically; a build for someone who wants to start gaming and doesn't have a ton of cash upfront, but eventually wants to turn it into a beast machine later on.

I think this would make for an interesting challenge as the idea is not to make the best performing machine within the initial provided budget.

No display, OS, or peripherals - just the main core system (CPU, Mobo, Ram, storage, GPU, PSU and case/chassis).

I think we should set two budgets.  The first one should be like MEC said $500-$600 range and the second would be for future upgrades.  Or we could do the first part of the build now and then three months later every one does upgrades for the winning build.

I like it. :)

Now I'm wondering, should the upgrade have a limited budget, or leave it open? I like the idea of trying to come up with the least expensive upgrade that provides the best performance increase...

Sorry guys, there was a series of unfortunate events (basically, couldn't access my normal computer and my phone wouldn't load the forum properly), and once that got sorted out, it was too late to post the challenge. I just took a two-day trip to start looking at different colleges (once again with only my phone), so I couldn't even post and say that this would be a "bye week."

Area 51 (probably bright colors and/or lighting required) will be the next challenge, followed by the Optimal Upgrade Path build.

What are your thoughts on doing less frequent builds at set price points, similar to the seasonally updated builds on Anandtech, TomsHardware, etc. (although this would probably be monthly). Otherwise, I could do a few "refresh" builds, but new hardware doesn't come out often enough (never thought I'd say that :)) to keep things interesting.

I was thinking of making builds based on a set pre build highly spec pc and basically match the build or better it.

Something like the Ailenware pc which has a price tag to match but specs could be better with that price. The build will have to include keyboard, mouse, monitor and speakers

My idea is to have annual budget price/performance build day every month. Multiple (2, 3, free choice?) pricepoints in one day. Idk

Then for the theme`d builds we would have only 1 build a month.

Vote for the winner of Week 51! I put up the poll yesterday, but forgot to make the announcement, so I am extending the contest to give time for voting.

Also, I will be at a summer program at the beginning of August, and the next challenge will most likely be posted on the 15th, the next Friday after I get back. Thanks for your understanding :)
