First Folding/Minig Rig HELP!?

Go to solution Solved by Tithonius,

I think im gonna end up going a different route anyway, but yeah, i definitly understand alot more about folding now, thanks a ton guys :D

Anyone know if that almost half price 960s are worth it for the money you save by buying them instead of the 970s?

Collecting every single CPU in existence? Is it possible? I have no idea, but i'm sure gonna try! http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/341848-dont-throw-away-old-cpus-im-collecting/

Its just about the same amount of money overall... and i would assume that having 3 seperate GPUs is better then just 2 cards. I like the 970 anyway, because ive been running it for a while now in my gaming rig, and i love it. what i need to know is wether or not it is worth it for me to get 960s instead of 970s

But while mining hashe's are what matter and amd cards are good at it.

I like Nvidia, and according to this post here: http://bit.ly/1FE7zkdthe Nvidia cards and AMD cards are both great.  he says:

"I have both AMD and NVidia folding systems. My thoughts - either are great. They have pros and cons. Typically you can find better deals on AMD cards. I find the AMD do outperform NVidia on Core 17 projects. However, for all those other Core project, NVidia still holds a commanding lead."

So im gonna stick with the 970s i have :D

Hey @Geldar, if this is my first rig, do you think that its gonna be better for me in terms of overall price, power draw, and ppd if i went with 3 or 4 960s? or should i stick with ponying up and buying the 970s over the course of the next few months?

Just some notes here...

First, for GPU folding, you have to use Windows. Linux GPU Folding is in Beta and doesn't even support newer cards.

CPU - If just folding, go with a i3, you don't need much. And dump the AiO... waste. You aren't OC'ing the CPU. Get a decent, basic cooler and you are good. Heck, I normally just used stock coolers in my GPU folders, but a CM Hper 212 or similar is perfect.

960's are half price... and would give you about half the return. Maybe bit more. If going for RAW folding return, the 970's would be better than the 960's.... but then look at your costs... you would be saving half on GPU's, which would allow you to buy the 4th 960 maybe?

8GB ram is overkill as is the SSD... 4GB plenty and if you can, just scrounge up an old hard drive. Failing that, by the cheapest, smallest mechanical one you can. You mobo was overpriced. The ASrock one was nice, just need to get yourself some x1 to x16 extenders and all set.

Remember, this is all about Folding and GPU return, the rest is as cheap and small as you can. Some of your parts were more geared towards a "gaming" system solution. That's fine, if you were also going to use this system as a daily driver / gaming... but otherwise, concentrate on GPU's...

Yeah your right about ram and the motherboard, and i have also changed my outlook on the build. Intead of alot of gpus i am going to try to build the best single card rig i can in the HAF 915F that way i will be able to put it on top of my existing gaming rig. Also I have been wanting to get my hands on a 290x2 for a while now, and this gives me a good excuse!

But you should check out the changes and see if everything makes sense to you! And tell me what I should change.

I know the GPU is expensive and I know it would be better if I got more then just the one card. But I want to do it in the HAF case, and I can't fold all the time anyway due to the power bill.

Also, I know that the aio is overkill, I want it to be overkill. I have the aio in there because the 295x2 has a very low thermal throttle limit at 75c. I want to exhaust as much heat directly out of the case as I can, so I figured the aio was a good bet. And I'm most likely sticking to it. As far as the CPU goes, if you think that an i3 will work with a 295x2 and be able to keep it at 100% and provide it with what it needs, I believe you and I'll go down to like a i3 4150 for an even hundred bucks.

Thanks for posting this man. I know the issue's resolved but I've been following posts on here and I now I know a lot more about folding rigs.

If just used for Folding, than the i3 should be fine.

I wouldn't use those, they don't get you any flexibility. Here is what I used previously...

http://www.amazon.com/Express-Adapter-Extender-Flexible-Extension/dp/B008BZBGPO

You can also get "powered" ones, but I never used those. May need for higher end cards though.

Example:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IKT1OGM/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1?pf_rd_p=1944687502&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B008BZBGPO&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0ZTHG5CDKK7XG4WWYNCZ

Flexibility isn't the reason why I chose it. The reason was the fact that you can make 3 PCIe out of one. So we could use a mitx board, for example. Alternatively, get a 7/6 PCIe mobo and use 21 / 18 GPUs with it.You know.... because why not? Maxwell is probably efficient enough for that.

Also, if we want flex, we can use the hub + a ribbon cable.
